M70 vs M1A

OK guys, I am looking to build a long range rifle and I have decided on either the M70 or the M1A but I can't make up my mind
What are the benifits of either. This will be .308 and I am looking for 500 yd accuracy! Also both my wife and I will be using this rifle :D The other thing is that both of us are left handed and shoot left handed, which is why I started looking at the M70 because I can buy it with left handed bolt.. Give me the pros and cons. I am in a delima

Thanks ahead of time

Aside from "500 yards", what are your uses? Your general intentions? The old "whatcha gonna do with it?" question has a heckuva lot to do with your decision.

Target competition, hunting as an "also", or just a "fun gun"?

Although there are considerable differences in your two choices- The biggest difference is price. You and your wife could both have your own LH M70's for the price of one M1A (and a lot of ammo to boot). In the right hands, I would assume that either choice would be plenty accurate at 500 yards. I'm a lefty also, and don't see anything about the M1A design that would be an issue. Let me the first to say," buy both" :p

Just a thought...

While sharing is nice, do you both have the same length of pull and do your eyes the same as hers with respects to using the scope? Point of impact may differ between you two.

get M70. Bolt guns tend to be more reliable and accurate than semi-auto rifles. If you want the accuracy down to 500 yards, M70 is for you.

M1A is not designed to be a supper accurate gun. It is a battle rifle. However, it can be accurate if you want to throw a lot of money in it.

M70 will (almost always) be more accurate. Will probably also kick more than your M1A. Don't know if your wife will like this.

M1A has rapid fire ability for target assessment within 100 yards, and will keep on firing through battlefield conditions.

What do you want in a rifle?

An M70 will - at a given price point - be more accurate than an M1A. Rebuilt and with match ammo, the M1A can in fact do better than MOA in terms of accuracy, but if you pour the same amount of $$$ into a bolt gun, it will shoot tighter groups than the gasgun. And it will probably be lighter. An M70 is easier to 'scope, and the factory trigger can usually be adjusted to be better than even a tuned M1A trigger.

I have both an M1A and an M70, and both are fine rifles. But they're actually aimed at somewhat different markets.
