M625 question/opinion

As I've said in another recent post, I am trying to purchase the last of my handguns prior to the end of 2002 as a PRK resident. I am going to take another look at M36 and M442 tonight to decide between the two.

Our budget allows for a 2nd handgun and that would pretty much close the purse strings and my collection.

Originally, I was thinking my collection needed K frame, but all this talk recently has me really missing the M625 I sold in 1993.

I have the opportunity to look at two 5" M625s now. One is a Model of 1988 (Pachmyers and the ramped front sight). It's in excellent condition and comes with the original box and cleaning kit, but the owner is asking $575. I think that is high, but we are in the PRK and M625's just don't show up often here, if at all.

I also have the opportunity to get a NIB 5" for $589. I have been avoiding purchasing a new S&W, but this has me torn. The same shop is confirming if they can get a 4" version for the same price. Both the 4" & 5" M625-8's are PRK approved.

Just wanted some feedback/opinions.

I think I would buy one for that kind of money, but I am not really up on their current price. I know I would like to have one. I was looking at a Model 25 in a rural gun store the other day. It wasn't in all that great of condition and he wanted $600 for it. He was high, probably way high, but at least that is some feedback. Personally, I would rather have a Model 625 than a Model 36. I think I would have a lot more fun with the 625, but maybe it is because I already have a Model 36 and a Model 60.

If competition isn't what your going after, go for the 5". Mine is excellent. I just wish I had more time to shoot:mad:

A pic...

rephrased question

I guess what I am really wondering is, as the prices are within a few dollars of each other, would you go for the older M625 or the new M625-8?

I have no experience with newer guns, MIM parts, the S&W hammer lock, etc.

$575 is a lot when new ones are only $14 more. You might point that out and see if the price on the used one falls any.
I had one that I bought new in 1990. Traded it +$50 for a new 4 inch model so that I can shoot it in IDPA. Then I found a deal on Auctionarms for a 625 MG for $400 and snapped it up. I like the proportions of the 4 inch much better. Check the firearms listing boards from time to time. You never know what may show up.

Even with the lock I prefer the frame mounted firing pin to the hammer mounted one. FWIW

Guess I really lucked out.

I bought a new 625-5 (without that stupid lock) about two years ago. The price was $550 AND there was a $50.00 rebate from S&W. I got the $50.00 check about 4 months later. Unexpectedly, it is the most accurate gun I own. Bowling pins at 50 yds. are no problem.

I recently acquired a used 3" model o' 1989, and it is surprisingly accurate for a snub. What's not to like? The only problem is that the gun is so cherry I almost hate to shoot it!

moot point

The seller of the used M625 has informed me that he is an FFL and thus the gun does not qualify for a PPT. I can't buy it in the PRK.:(

I've got a few more months to locate one. Maybe a deal will turn up. Worst case is that in early December I have the shop order me a new one.

In the meantime, I bought the M36 which I will pick up in 10 days.

I'd get the Model of 1988; you can always get one of the new (cheesy lock and MIM parts-having) new ones, but you don't stumble across one of the older ones every day of the week. Going rate for a 625-3 is close to five bills around here, too.

What is this cheesy lock and MIM parts stuff on the new 625's? I have a 5" 625-6 with the frame mounted firing pin but no locks or apparant MIM parts? It is a big gun, but the feature I love about this gun besides it's inherent accuracy is the flexibility of using .45acp or the .45ar which I can hotly load for all those dangerous critters out here in the MT boondocks.
