*&* M57 should I buy it?

Okay, here's the situation--

I just bought an M57 last week, (8 3/8", pinned, recessed, nickle, with some pitting on the cylinder, the bore and chambers are immaculate, though) for $225. Just yesterday, I see a blue M57 for $399. The muzzle end of the barrel shows a little wear, probably from a holster. I'll take a better look at it tomorrow. The finish looks pretty good, aside from the muzzle wear. I think I got my nickel M57 for a steal, but what do you all think about this blued one for $399? I'll post more details when I look at the gun again -- if it's still there. It's either this gun or an L-frame .357 that I'm going to turn into a PPC gun. I figure, I can always find the .357, but I don't see M57's around all that often. My dad says I should get a .44 mag, but I know I'll be seeing this gun in my dreams if I pass up what may be a good buy.

If you're comfortable with the price, buy it.

That sounds like a bit on the high side for a 57, but they can be hard to come across.

What is the barrel length?

I've got a Model 58 4", and I freaking adore it.

I think once you get a .41 Mag. and use it, and especially if you load for it, you're going to forget about the .44.

Of course, this is likely just my virulent bias against all things Smith & Wesson talking...

I concur with our friend Mike, as the price does seem a bit
high. Should be able to find a M57, or M58 at a better price.

For a PPC gun, I think the L-frame 586/686 would make for
an excellent starting point.

I think you paid a fair price for the nickle one.

That blued one sounds high. Should be around $250 if the muzzle wear is the only blemish. $275 if pinned and recessed.

But.......what's it worth to you ?

Sam

Not familiar with the asterisk and asterisk brand...

interesting that it shares a model designation with the Smith & Wesson brand...

what is this *&* ?????????

get over it... say the name... if you can't say it, you shouldn't own or buy any of their weapons...

CR Sam- Um, where are you finding M57s with slight blue wear at the muzzle for no more than $275? I'll take three at this price. One to keep and I'll auction the other two and make enough to pay for the first one.

Figurin it at 98 percent and using Fjestad's book.
Real life, just recently found two nice N frames, $225 and $250.
.41 don't show up often but sometimes they are hard to sell too.

Patience, and never go out without buy money.

Sam

I have not seen ANY M57/58s here, right in S&W's (*&*'s?) backyard. I would think that they would go for a little less, but not much.

It's funny how we price our firearms. They definitely appreciate in value whether they are worth it or not.

Just be glad that you do not live in the People's Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

CRSam- I find those prices AMAZING! Checking the auction sites the average selling price for deluxe N frames (27,57,29) averages to around $400. Not asking, that's what they are selling for. There were many bids in excess of $450 that did not meet the seller's reserve, meaning the bidders were willing to pay that much.

At the last three shows I attended I did not see one of these marked under $500. Even allowing for negotiations, I can't imagine a dealer coming down to below half of asking price.

Where do you live? I am not joking, I want to know where these guns are selling at these prices.

my father just bought a model 657 Smith (stainless) with a Leupold 1.5 to 4 variable pistol scope and a mount, 200 rounds of ammo,a nice hardcase, and 2 holsters (ine hip, and one shoulder, BOTH for "scoped" carry) for $450.00...

C.R. Sam can't be too far wrong for a plain ol' 57 or 58 in decent condition...

next one I see,I'll post here, so y'all in the higher priced areas can get it!

I guess there's something to be said for location, location, location.
I just paid $400 for a 4" M57 in excellent condition with presentation box and original papers.
I guess I should have tried to talk him down but I was so damn excited I forgot too!:D

Around my way, there is no way to touch any 57 or 58 for less than $400.

Don't think I have ever bought a handgun off of a gun show table. Nor a swapmeet table. Have gotten them from estate sales, garage sales, pawn shops etc etc. Many pawnbrokers that sell guns don't know them that well. Sometimes it is easy to use their book and show them five or so percentage points that should be knocked off of what they thought the condition was. And a few of them can skin me alive with their knowledge too.

When I had my gun businesses, I rarely saw a NEW gun that would go 100 percent.

Today saw a like new 8 3/8" 586 with all the Ts that went for 400 even. I got beat to it so never got to learn if I could have gotten it for 3 or less. I would not have gone over that.

I don't get a lot of them. If I can't get it for my offer, I thank em for the time and walk.

I carry a little green. I have a 4473 filled out except for signature just in case.

And I am patient.

Sam

Thanks for the responses, all. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the gun again, maybe tomorrow, I guess. It's 8 3/4" bbl, pinned, recessed, blued with some wear on the sides of the muzzle end.

You did good. Around here they are higher.

Of course, this is likely just my virulent bias against all things Smith & Wesson talking...

...and Mike, you're acting like a jackass.

I will state this AGAIN.

NO ONE SAID YOU ARE BIASED AGAINST THE OLD ONES......

Give it a rest. We can "have a discussion" when you slam the new models.

jeeez............

Frenchy,

He's been adding that to most of his posts since I called him on his bias of the NEW versions of Smith guns.

We had a pretty heated "discussion" a few days back.

Now he's being childish about it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw a real cherry M57 last week at a local shop. It was $550. It wasn't THAT special. Might have been negotiable though.

Oh, NO tongue in cheek at all, Frenchy.

I'm so biased against Smith & Wesson that I've taken to purchasing 13 of them simply to keep them out of the hands of those who are less biased than myself.

I've been shown the error of my ways, in believing that it's important to fight for my rights as a gun owner by asking, nay, demanding, that those manufacturers that would profit from from the Second Amendment actually support its goals and aims.

Obviously, nothing could be further from the truth, and I'm simply biased for believing so.

But, to paraphrase someone who actually believed in the importance of some causes...

"If this be bias, make the most of it."
