M500- where to find weaver rail? Help!

Hey guys,

I accidentally dropped my M500 on the ground after it slipped out of my case. The gun is undamaged, but the rear sight blade has snapped off.

I removed the entire rear sight assembly and I see 4 holes, 3 of which have been drilled through the frame. I can't seem to find X-frame replacement sights from Smith and Wesson's website, so I'm thinking about mounting a Walther red dot scope on it.

Problem is, I can't find a generic 20mm weaver rail that will replace the rear site assembly (not counting the expensive Wagner ones). The ones mentioned on Smith and Wesson's website mention they are for K, L, and N frame revolvers, but not X.

Any help would be appreciated :D

it looks interesting, but I was looking for something smaller- this thing is too long and ugly, and since my rear sight is gone, I have no need for the stock iron sights with my red dot.

I am still curious though if the K, L, N frame rear sights kits from Smith and Wesson will fit the X-frame M500?

I have a base from B-square for a N frame gun. If you have a N frame gun you could compare to see if would be the same as the X frame gun. With the B-Square you need to remove the rear sight.

I have four N frame guns. I just looked at the rear sights. There are two different sights. At the every front part of the sight one is round and the other square and the holes are in different locations. The B-square I have is made for the rounded type sight.

I could give you some measurements if you like.

the rear sight assembly on the M500 is 2.6 inches long and .5 inch wide. it is rounded on the barrel side, with a single screw holding the slip-in assembly. This assembly holds the rear sight blade and adjustment screws for windage and elevation.

Does that sound like your N-frame rear sight assemblies?

No! The sight is about 2.6 long but only .280 wide. under the sight there is three holes that are spaced .773 or I would say 3/4 of a inch apart. Part of the base on the bottom fits down in the grove where the rear sight goes and it is .278. I don't think it will work. The base fits the contour of the top of the frame and the frame is only .658 wide. Damn the X frame must be big!! Sounds like your rear sight is almost as wide as the topstrap on a N frame

Yeah, the X frame is huge to accomodate the gigantic cylinder.....

Here's the thing. The assembly ISNT damaged. The rear sight blade is the ONLY problem.

EDIT: since only the blade is damaged, isn't there a way to slip it out and put another one in from another gun?

They sell rear sight blades here, but mention they are for K L N frames. Being that they are just the blades, wouldn't these fit in my M500 rear sight assembly?

Hey Seth, I just measured the width of the rear sight blade on my M500 and it's 5/8", which is the same as the rear sight blade on my M627, an N frame. My guess is that the parts are identical. You could write to customer service at Smith and ask just to be on the safe side before ordering.

thanks for the feedback guys, I emaile Smith and Wesson and they said the .126'' rear sight blade kit for the K frame, L and N frame revolvers will fit the M500 Xframe. I also ordered a red fiber optic front sight and K-frame rosewood grips....there goes the remainder of my paycheck. :D

You're not planning to put those rosewood grips on the 500 are ya? If so, that's gonna hurt!

Let us know how you like the fiber-optic front sight, I might be interested in trying one out myself.

Sure thing, will do. The stuff should come in on Thursday if FedEx gets their butt going and ship it to Hawaii.

The rosewood grips are just for display, I know it will be a bad idea to fire the 500 without the Hogue Sorbathanes ;) I don't even know if the K-frame round butt grips will fit, I have read somewhere that the M500 takes K-frame grips, but we'll have to see....

I'm looking forward to the fibre optic sight, I ordered the replacement rear blade (without the white outline) to match. Smith and Wesson sells tools used to install rear sight kits- do I need this to install my rear sight blade? Can I do it at home with simple tools? Or could a local gun store do it for me?

To be honest, I've never installed a rear sight-blade on a Smith, so have no idea what it entails. I'm sure a local shop would be glad to refer you to a nearby gunsmith who could take care of it for you for not too much money.

Installing the rear blade was a MAJOR pain....and I also lost a tiny 2mm spring that held the windage screw in tension via a tiny plunger....

So I just ended up aligning/centering the blade best I could, then screwing it in without the plunger and spring. Now the sight is fixed, but is still functional. currently waiting on a replacement plunger spring from MidwayUSA.

I replaced the stock front sight with the SDM Fabricating .250 red fibre optic front sight (which was also a MAJOR pain- it lacks a tiny "hooking" piece the stock sight has, so you have to hold the sight locking pin down with a paper clip while inserting the sight). The front sight is definitely an improvement over the stock blade. The fiber optic cylinder collects tons of light, even in dim areas. The sight picture looks as if you're looking down an illuminated red dot. I recommend it if you have the $35 to put down (its pricey for what it is...)

The K-frame rosewood cherry grips were a direct swap after removing the stock Hogue grip hinge. Looks nice :D
