M48 Yugo build questions

I have always wanted to build a heavy barreled benchrest rifle, and the bug is biting hard. I have alot of shooting experience, but no building experience. Would the Yugo M48 be a good platform to build off of? They are cheap and plentiful. Are parts available for a build? I would like to chamber it in 6 or 6.5mm.What kind of things should I be considering? Forgive my ignorance, but I am a complete noob in this area.

Building a heavy barrel benchrest gun out of a M48 yugo mauser would be like building a Formula One racing car on an AMC Gremlin platorm

The only real problem with the M48 is the same as the other surplus Large ring mausers - the thunb cut-out.

That said, it's not a bad place to start (especially since you can get 2-3 actions to play with and learn something along the way). Try some acurizing techniques and still have another action to go with your expensive barrel and stock if you mess something up....

But, if you are already ging to pay $500 or more for a stock and $300 or more for a barrel, getting a Remmington or Savage action starts to look cheap when you figure the deals you can get on barrels, triggers, and stocks (and firing pins and floorplates and scope mounts and...).

For any work on the M48, remember that the action is about 1/2" shorter than the standard 98 Mauser, so a lot of Mauser after-market stuff (like scope mounts) won't fit.
