M48 rebarrel questions

Hello all,

I've been trying to find some definitive info on rebarreling yugo M48's and so far I havn't found anything credible. Basically wondering if I can use a standard large ring mauser barrel? I've been told that there might be a 3/16 shorter length in which to thread the barrel into the receiver so I'd have to mill the barrels down about that much (off of the breech end). Also, I understand that the m48's barrels have a recessed area in which the bolt or extractor rests? If both of these are the case then the people telling me to just "put 'em together" are full of crap. Please let me know what you've all found in doing this yourselves.
Thanks,
John

The only difference is the length of the ejection port and bolt. The receiver rings are the same diameter and length as a standard-length '98 Mauser. M48's use a standard large-ring action Mauser barrel. They are a large-ring Mauser - only 1/4" shorter.

Dear Sir:
My Yugo M48 has the same length bolt and reciever as a VZ24 etc; but it really makes no difference. Either you will find you bbl' thread will be 1.100 X 12tpi, or .980X12tpi. The 11 1/2 thread is a machining error - recievers are always 12TPI. If you're ordering a semi inlet (Boyds are good) stock just measure between your guard screws and get the right stock.
I've run into that "intermediate bolt" - it is approx 3/16 inch shorter than a VZ24 bolt.
I think my article on rebarreling Mausers is on Page 5 of this site entitled "Turkish Mausers" and it might be of help.
I also ran into a "turkish mauser???" with only four threads for the barrel!
Now; four complete threads will hold all that the bolt can take and 75% threads will hold 90% of what 100% threads will. The test on these Mausers (or most others) is that if you can set-up the bbl. good and tight don't worry about it. Any high powered rifle with properly cut threads the bbl can be screwed up hand-tight and fired safely.
I hope I've helped and not confused but YOU can do this; the Mausers are the easiest rifles extant to fit bbls' to

There has been a lot of confusion about the Yugo M48 and M48A, mostly because some sellers advertise them falsely as "K98k" or "German issue" or "WWII rifles". They are none of those. But the receiver is definitely shorter than the standard Mauser 98 (K98k, VZ24, FN24, etc.). Harry, if your M48 has the same bolt length as your VZ24, either you don't have an M48 or you don't have a VZ24.

There were a lot of rifles imported from the former Yugoslavia. Those folks bought/made rifles over a period of 50+ years, and apparently never threw away a gun. The result is a variety of the basic Mauser design that is just bewildering. Plus, they (like the Turks) went through several iterations of rebuilding old rifles to conform to new configurations, leading to more confusion.
