M48 Mauser Short Action?

I have a question for the experts about a Yugo M48 Mauser 98 I have. Actually, I have two Mauser 98 barreled actions, a Czech Vz-24 and a Yugo M48. The M48 is simply the barreled action I bought to build into a sporter (the bore is mint!). I just bought a Ramline Syntech stock (Mauser M98 Long Action), and when I put the M48 into it (or tried to), it didn't fit. It was too short to fit into the slot in the stock for the action. "!@#$% Ramline," I thought. Just as I was about to shelve the project (didn't want to Dremel the stock--just yet), I had a random thought and pulled my Vz-24 from the military stock and...it dropped right into the Ramline stock! Perfect fit (sorry, Ramline). Didn't bother to take it out, and now can't wait to shoot it.

OK, so now I'm confused. I thougth the large ring Mausers, i.e. 98K, Vz-24, M48, Turk (large ring small thread, I know) were LONG ACTION Mausers. Was/am I wrong? I know the difference between long action and short action is slight. The M48 looked about a good quarter inch too short for the stock.

Thanks for the help.

I just happen to be researching Spanish m93's right before I came ol, so in the book by Jerry Kuhnhausen on mauser bolt actions it says.....
action type/size--intermediate
action oal--- 8.500
receiver screws---7.620
bolt body length---6.115
magazine length---3.232
large ring dia---1.410
barrel shank---1.100
etc.... ..fubsy...

I did not realize this myself until your post, but according to Jerry Kuhnhausen's "The Mauser Bolt Actions" (1991), the M48 Yugoslavian Mauser does indeed have a lesser Over All Length of 8.500" versus the standard OAL of the VZ24 and so many others at 8.750".
Your observation of the M48 action being 1/4" shorter than the Standard Model German arm is right on the money.

Jeez, I'm sitting here with Kuhnhausen's book on my shelf, and I missed that, too.

Now I have a dilema: I had wanted to rebarrel the Vz-24 in .308 and keep the M48 in 8mm (much better bore), but if the M48 is a shorter action, I would prefer to rebarrel that one.

Maybe swap barrels from the M48 to the Vz-24 and rebarrel the M48...

How could someone NOT like this hobby?
