Is it possible to replace the bolt shroud on a Mauser M48 with one like on Midways site so that the safety is on the side instead of over the top. i am going to be mounting a scope and prefer to stay away from the high rings if possible.

Thanks
Evan

There have been several replacement shroud and saftey kits made for Mausers over the years. Brownells carries them, too. Many require some machining. I haven't looked at the Midway one in particular, so I don't know whether it expects you to have a milling machine or not?

The best way is with a cast shroud that has no safety on it and then use a Bold or Timney trigger with a Remmington style safety and you can use a rasp or whatever tool you want to open up the side of the stock to use it. Lots if different folks sell the cast shroud for around $35 and then another $40 for the trigger. I think the name of the company that sells it is Sunnyhill, but I cannot remember off the top of my head right this second.

Otherwise, you can either buy one already machined for around a $150+ or you can machine your own with a milling machine and the cutter that Brownells sells with the kit.

I just installed a Bold trigger on a Yugo 24/47 with the side safety that I got from Boyds Gunstocks for $38. Some minor inletting to the stock was required and a very small amount of the shroud was filed down for clearance. I left the stock safety alone. It seems to be a much better trigger for me and installation was easy. Just take your time and keep checking the fit.
