M44 rechamered in .308?

Is it possible to have a Mosin Nagant M44 rechamered for .308 winchester?
And if so what would the general cost be?

Deadman I don't think it could be done. Most of the Mosins had .310-.312 bores depending on use and that wouldn't bevery good for a .308 bullet as far as accuracy. Some of the Finn Mosins had tighter bores about .309 but even then I'm not sure it would be worth the cost. Even if you could find someone to actually do a full rebarrel then you would have the problem of the bolt which is for the rimmed 7.62x54R wouldn't work with the .308 Win. Personally I think you would be throwing your money away trying to do this to a $70 rifle. There's plenty of surplus 7.62x54R floating around. Buy some and have fun with the old piece.

If you're worried about corrosive ammo check out www.empirearms.com On the left side of the page there is a link to an article on how to clean after shooting corrosive ammo. It's very easy and works and doesn't involve any boiling water

You might be able to rechamber for 307 Win, which is a rimmed 308 for all intents. The bore diameter is still too large, however.

The mag won't work well at all, I'm guessing because it and the M44's interrupter are designed for rimmed cartridges. It'd probably end up looking a lot like the old 20s Bannerman 30-06 (unsafe) conversions by the time the head and extractor and whatnot were modified.

Personally, with decent 7.62x54 surplus available at .10 a round or so, I just don't see the point.

I know the point!

I am thinking the same thing, "Why on earth would you want to change the cartridge? Shoot up all that cheap 7.62x54 and enjoy it." And then I realize, there are so many of us on here who would love the challenge or even the thought of making our own wildcat dreams come true. So as Deadman comes away realizing it might not work, it is the same all over these boards. Gun enthusiasts living their dreams. That is the point. I think we all can love that.

Instead of spending the money to convert the 44 to .308 you might just as well spend the money on a surplus gun chambered for it like an Enfield.
