Question - 1 - A friend of mine just bought a MN M44 Carbine and we cant figure out how to adjust the windage on it. The rear sight is elevation only I believe, and the front post doesnt seem to move. Anyone know?

Question - 2 - Another friend just bought a german Mauser 98 supposedly captured and remarked by the yugoslavs. We took it to the range last night and it was shooting about a foot high at 100 yards with the rear sight leaf set all the way down. Are we doing something wrong? Also....the side of the receiver has a mark on it that says Preduzece 44. Anyone know what this means?

Thanks for the help!

M44 carbine sight adjustment

I have a polish M 44 carbine and it shot a less than two inch group at one hundred yards the first time out with 148 grain soviet ball ammo. Now concerning sight adjustment, hop on over to mosin-nagant dot.net and there will be info and links to help you with sight adjustment. Typically, you should just have to carefully bend the front post to set windage zero. I would shoot the rifle first to see where the bullet is impacting before undertaking any adjustment. These are very robust rifles and are litterally a BLAST to shoot. The 7.62 R seems to have taken off with the populararity of these rifles and such there is some domestic manufacture of ammo and plenty of surplus ammo as well. You will really enjoy your rifle as you gain more insight on it's care and feeding. Take care and shoot safe.:) :D :D

Mauser answers...

The rifle should be hitting about 8-12" high at the lowest sight setting, unless the setting is marked for 100 meters. It's zeroed for about 300 meters, give or take. Most military rifles are zeroed for about a 300 meter batttlesight zero.

Preduzece 44 is the name of the factory where the rifle was made (or could be the factory where it was reworked).

The front sight can be tapped right and left. Study it- the entire sight slides. Be sure to shoot with the bayonet extended, otherwise it will shoot far to the right. I get a few funny looks at the range, but the smart people can figure out why I have the bayonet extended.
