M40A3, new USMC ordnance…

Moved by the "dated" material (and matériel) at Sniper Country, there's a new M40A3 page up in TGZ with range photos of the real rifle, in addition to a report by Pat Rogers, someone who's actually fired the guns.

Well, I'll believe 19.2 pounds when I see it at the unit. If half the stuff he says is true, than I'll be very happy. If that's all true, I think I'll have a heart attack from disbelief. The M40A1 I lug around weighes 14.5 w/scope, no can. I imagine they are going to use a similar barrel profile since I don't see anyway they could make it bigger. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

New Model A3...........in an A4 stock

Ken, I'm with you, the A1's a load, 19#'s plus?????......they trying to kill you guys before you can do your job!!!!!!!

Well I wonder which desk bound idiot came up with this? Why not just have the snipers drag a 105 close to their target and go for it. I guess this is going the way of fighters and other support equipment, make it so damn complicated that it won't do anything well. This is the one absolute place to use the KISS principal. How long will it take to lug this abomination back to the armory when something falls off.

Abomination??? Aside from the weight what would make it an abomination. I truly doubt that they would field a 19# SWS. You have to remember that the system now includes a Harris bi-pod and a suppressor; both of which can be left behind unless truly needed. By the sounds of things the only changes to the actual weapon are the stock, trigger guard, and scope mounts. The rest is the same. My bet is that the rifle itself checks in somewhere around 15#.

I know the Marines at Quantico SSIS and WTBN. I wouldn't characterize any of them as "Desk Bound Idiots".

Besides, it is probably unwise to pick on anyone who CHOOSES to carry around a 19lb rifle.

Semper Fi!

Hey Ken, Haven't seen any of your posts since I quit going to Shooters. And that has been a very long time ago.

Just took a gander at that new rifle and it does look like quite a change from what was available back when I was in.

Amen on getting rid of the removeable magazine. That will eliminate one more dirt port and stiffen things up a bit more. Always nice to have a stiff platform to shoot accurately. Plus, it might make a few of those "nose dives" into the muck a bit less of a problem.

Also don't see the weight as all that big a deal. I can tell everyone here that it would be REAL WELCOME when "Dotting The Eye" w-a-y out yonder.

For the "spray and pray" folks, I can see where that weight would be a significant detrement at getting all those "totally unguided shots" to where ever they are sending them. But then, this rifle is not for them anyhow.

Good hunting and clean 1-shot kills, Hot Core Semper Fi!

Anything CWO Pat Rogers writes can be safely assumed true.
