M24/47 Shooting better

Mosin-Marauder

New member
As some of you recall, I was struggling to hold anything below 3" with my new Mauser. I sanded the barrel channel and hand guard channel today and relieved all contact points on the barrel (except the front band)and now I got this today with Turkish surplus.

1 5/8" 5 shot group at 50 yards (farthest I can safely shoot). It's not great by any means, but I'm happy with the improvement. And I'm sure I could do better with better ammo and more practice (plan to order 100 rounds of PPU soft points from SG, can't really do any reloading now) but I am happy nonetheless. Also, any advice for improvement is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'm glad you are shooting your Yugo better. I'll bet if you try different ammunition, you'll find something that your rifle really likes. I've shot various commercial and surplus loads through several different 8mm Mausers and the Turkish surplus was the least accurate.

I've never seen ammo in that weight class shoot well out of Yugo. Turk ammo is 154 grain and even if I reload bullets in that weight class they don't do real well. The Yugo ammo is 196 grain.

I have two cases of Yugoslavian 8mm ammo that most will not fire. The primers are set too deep, all 196 grain. I pull the bullet and powder and load it into boxer primed cases. 1-1/2 inch 100 yard groups, probably would do better with younger eyes.

I know this is no where near "good" per se. But it is improvement. I need to practice a lot more. Luckiliy I have plenty more ammo for that. I plan to try and find some commercial ammo sometime soon.

Thanks,

-Mo.

Just know that when you buy commercial you will be disappointed. That stuff is so under loaded for the most part it is useless.

Actually the 198 grain PPU would be the only one I would buy. Even so, it is still 150-200 fps below the military loading. I've shot it, works well.

Really, if you want to shoot other than surplus and have the rifle at full potential you really need to reload for it. One bullet that works well in my Yugos and German K98's is the Sierra 175 grain. 50 Grains of Varget is full pressure and runs at around 2650fps.
