As I mentioned in another thread, I bought a gorgeous Springfield M1A this weekend. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to get it to the range -- soon, though... very soon...
In any event, I'm planning to purchase a fiberglass stock from Fred's and would like to know if anyone has any experience mounting sling swivels appropriate for a Ching Sling. I've used them in the past on other rifles and found them to be quite handy, and would love to have one on my new "everything" rifle.
So my question is threefold:
(1) How does one cleanly remove the military-style swivels fore and aft? They seem riveted into place on the walnut stock presently on the gun. Do you just take the action out and go to work with pliers/punch/hammer/etc.? Or is there a trick to make it easier/less likely to booger up the stock.
(2) I've heard JB Weld mentioned before as a good product to use to fill in the selector cut-out. What is it and how would it work on filling old sling swivel holes?
(3) How thick is the stock wall? I'd hate to start drilling and punch through to a big hollow area with nothing for the swivel mount point to bite into.
To paraphrase an old friend of mine: advice, comments, smart remarks? (Preferably in that order, but play it any way you like)
