M1A Scout Pricing and Performance

A local dealer has an M1A Standard for about $1400 and an M1A Scout for $1400. Isn't the M1A Standard listed as $150 LESS than the Scout?

He asked me 'if I'm going to spend that much money on a rifle why not buy a fullsize' (instead of a Scout) and that the Scout is inaccurate for shooting with iron sights, the standard is much better, etc.

I know he has kids to college and caveat emptor, etc., but is the Scout that much less of a performer, or is he trying to pass the $200 markup ($1200 to $1400 for a Standard model as opposed to $1350 to $1400 for a Scout)on to me? (Turner's, a local chain, has Standards for $1200 and out of stock of Scouts for $1350).

Please advise.

If you want the standard, why not ask him to meet the competitors price of $1200? If you want the Scout, then buy it. It sounds like he's just feeling out the market (you being the market). Your probably correct in assuming that his profit margin is higher on the Standard model.

I own 2 M1As, one full size "loaded" walnut, and one "scout" fiberglass. The scout can hold its own out to 300 yds, the farthest I've shot either. The loaded model comes with a med. weight NM bbl, and NM front sight and non-hooded NM rear sight. I replaced my front and rear sights on the scout to match. The loaded does indeed shoot exceptionally accurate, but the scout is no slouch either, in fact, it is more accurate at 100 yds than the 2 standard models I have shot owned by two of my shooting buddies. There are two good articles on the M1A scout in the Feb. 2000 issue of Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement, and in the Dec. 2001 issue of Soldier of Fortune. The guns they tested were also exceptional. I agree with the theory of Chuck Karawan, who wrote the SOF article, that the shorter bbl combined w/the scope mount ruggedly clamped to the bbl. can't help but make it pretty darn stiff, taking some bbl. whip out of the equation. My loaded will shoot sub MOA on an average at 100 yds (3 shot) with Win. Supreme 168gr BTHP Match, if I do my part right. (.951", .963", and .971",ctc, last time out) My scout will give sub 1 1/2" groups with the same. In fact, I am so happy with its accuracy, I am yet to scope it. I do however intend to pick up a Leupold 2X scout scope and quick detatch rings and do some coyote hunting after deer season. Hides aren't worth squat anymore, might as well have some fun in thinning out the population. :D BTW, the standard does go for about $150 less than the scout, and the loaded walnut goes for about $125 more. Get the one that most appeals to you, you won't make a bad choice in either one.

i assume you're in california? if so, then turners is never really "out of stock" on guns. you can just buy it and they'll get it from their warehouse. of course, if they're out of stock in the local store, and you want to handle it for yourself, that doesn't really help you.

good luck on whatever you decide.

Oops! Oh so solly! I got the Scout model from Turner's for $1350. No optics or bipod or nothin. I'm gonna shoot it for a while to see what my needs are before I spring for them.

Congrats on your new baby! I'm sure you will love it. I found an excellent buy on a new Pentax ZERO-X scout scope, and opted for it over the Leupold. Put some Leupold quick release rings on it and sighted it in last Sunday. All I can say is SWEEEEEET! Get some Tetra grease, and some surplus ammo and let the fun begin.
