M1A Scout Conversion

I have one Poly M14, and I have found another that I may be able to purchase. If I do so, I would really like to convert it over to a Scout, if that is even possible. Is it feasible to cut crown and rethread the existing barrel, or would I have to purchase an new barrel assembly. If this can be done, how much would I be looking at to make the conversion. (Now that I have thought about this while typing I bet my best bet is to have 2 standard rifles...)

Now that you don't want to do it, I'm not sure how much use the information is? You could shorten the barrel some. You'd have to contour the front of the cutoff portion to match the part you cut off. A machinist or a gunsmith with a machine shop could do this, but unless someone's done it before and has fixtures already made to speed their setups, I doubt it would cost less than a new barrel already correctly contoured. I also don't know how far you can take the barrel back before the gas port would have to be widened? That gas system is pretty tolerant of load variety.

Problem Solved

I sent the pistol back to Ruger. Since I had already spoken with a customer rep. and sent it to his attention, I got the pistol back in exactly 2 weeks. I'm now going to try taking it apart once more without breaking it.....

As an off-shoot, but slightly on-topic:

I have a Springfield M1A Scout, 18" barrelled rifle.

In retrospect, I probably would have been better served with a 22" standard rifle.

Is it possible to replace my barrel with a match-grade 22" barrel and retain the existing stocks, handguard, gas system, front sight, flash hider, spring and op rod, or will a large amount of parts swaps be required?

Not looking to do this myself, I would pass this on to a solid gunsmith in the Phoenix area.
 
Just the barrel change should do it. Check with SA in case they mod the gas system in any inobvious way, but I doubt they need to bother.

Poly M14

Hey,
My brother has one of those Poly M14's.
Some time ago,we read alot of bad stuff about this gun.
How some were made that wasn't safe to shoot.
He some some type of problem,with his about the time we read that the
Poly M14's made in China had big problems.
He then went and got a Springfield M14.
I think the pronlem was in the head space,but I mot sure.
Might want to check this out.
Someone here might know more about this ?
 
I am aware of the problems associated with some Poly's, but I have NO issues with mine yet, and I've put a few hundred rounds through it already (bought it new/ unfired). Mine is a rather late serial #, and it shoots 7.62 and 308 flawlessly, and it is wicked accurate for what I want too.
