M1A scope mounts Q's........

Okay, more M1A and scope mount questions.......

I've been looking in the Brownell's catalog and places online. So far, all I've been able to find is a mount that uses the side 'hole and slots' & the stripper clip dove tail or a 3 point mount.

Is there anything that just uses the original mount....... not the stripper dove tail also? I don't want to remove the stripper guide. Or is the "original" mount suppose to use that dove tail too??? I've seen two or three different designs so far......

I'm new to M1A's..........

The military Brookfield mount used the stripper as do most good mounts. There are some POS $39 mounts that don't but I don't know why you wouldn't want to use the stripper. If you have the mount on there you can't use the stripper for it's function anyways. Also the mounts that use the stripper are lower so you can get a better sight picture and cheek weld. Also they hold better by haveing an extra anchor point. These are just a few points to think about before buying a mount. One of the better mounts I've seen and used it the Smith Enterprise mount. It can be had for about $150 at a few different places like Dilon Precision.

Why don't you want to remove the stripper clip guide? It's not like you can use it with a scope there anyway.

The ARMS #18 is a great mount.

Ah, I see now............

OKay, that's the info I figured I'd hear. Now, how do you remove the roll pin????? (Haven't really taken a close look at my M1A ....)

Thanks.

With a punch.

I believe that punch size on that particular pin is 3/16". Let me check real quick. No I was wrong. It is 3/32". Get a 3/32" punch and all you have to do is tap the pin into the rifle until it is just clear of the stripper clip guide. Then tap the stripper clip guide off of the rifle (there is one side it is supposed to go to but I forget. It will say in your instructions). Tap the new scope anchor on until it lines up with the pin hole. Tap the pin back in until it clears the opening in the rifle so that your bolt can once again freely slide through the reciever. It really is easy. I didn't have a 3/32" punch when I first did it and being a youthful idiot without patience, I just used one of the pins that came with my mount as a punch and was able to acomplish the task. I don't recommend that route. It was much easier to take the mount off when I bought a 3/32" punch. Good luck.

Mount recommendations????

Well, now that that has been answered, how about some recommendations. I've seen different mounts, from Leapers, Springfeild, Smith Enterprises(?), so on.

I'd like one that is 'quality', gets the job done, but not too expensive. Leapers says $39.99, S&K is about $80ish and the others are $140+...... comments and suggestions?

Thanks.

Get the Smith Enterprise or the ARMS. They are more expensive at first but will pay for themselves in holding zero and keeping you from throwing your rifle when the cheaper mounts constantly loosen up. And don't think locktite will help. You can throw it in a vat of locktite and it will still loosen. Learn from my friends and my mistakes. Don't go cheap because you won't be happy.

My brookfield was around $200, but it works well, so no worries. My experience with the cheaper mounts was I had problems with slippage.
