M1a peep apature

I have an M1a Ntl Match and I love the gun but it is very hard to pick up the front site through the apature against a dark background. Is the peep apature smaller on a NM than on a standard M1a or are they the same?

I think that they are basically the same, except the NM sight has 0.5 MOA adjustments compared to 1.0 MOA adjustments on the standard. I have a hard time seeing mine also. If I ever do any close shooting with my scout in low light conditions, I will be aiming a few inches low and using only the front sight.

M16a223,

I think that the standard battle rear aperture on the M14 has a .080 opening. This is the same as the M1 Garand (at least all of mine have them this size). The NM rear sight for the M1-A has a .052 opening (mine does, anyway).

The "hooded" Match rear apertures come in two sizes, .052 and .059.

Any M1 Garand or M14 gurus feel free to correct me.....

Most often marked 520 or 595 on the match sights. The smaller the hole "in good light" the finer the sight picture. I only have one Garand with issue sights and the hole in the rear looks huge! In practice, it works like a ghost ring sight, very fast and very light friendly.
