M1A Buttstock cleaning kit question....

I just received my USGI Buttstock Cleaning kit from Springfield. In the canvas rod pouch, there was a little rubber/plastic tube, about an inch long and clear. It's basically a little piece of hose. I couldnt fit the rod pouch in the stock because of this, so I just removed it. What the heck is this little thing for? I was able to fit the combo tool, chamber brush, and oiler in the top section easily, and the rod pouch without too much trouble. But that little piece of tube bugs me. If anyone knows what its for I would appreciate it. Thanks!

If it's what I think it is, you are supposed to put the brush inside this tube to protect the bristles.

It holds the cleaning rod tip and cleaning brush together, also protects their threads (picture is of the similar M1 Garand cleaning kit). -- Kernel
