How do you remove the bolt from an M1A without removing the action from the stock?

Thanks guys. :)

Pull upward and out (to the right) on the op rod handle as you draw it back. There is a release cutout in the op rod channel near the windage know.

Pull the op rod out and away from the bolt, then let the op go forward from the bolt to its most forward position.

It takes a bit of wiggling, but rotate the bolt a bit counter-clockwise and extract it from the receiver. You must align the firing pin tang with either the clearance cut in the receiver bridge, or rotate the bolt far enough that it clears in another space, before pulling the bolt forward and out of the receiver. Can't remember exactly, but you'll figure it out.

M1a bolt

kgs, why are you taking it out???.
If you are going to take it apart, I hope you have done so before......as it is a bugger.....you'll need the proper tools, and three hands....and watch out fot the ejector, and spring.....it will shoot off like a cannon....
If not.....nevermind...........

Tshoes......

The reason for taking the bolt out is to give it a good cleaning. I don't plan on disassembling the bolt at all.
Anyway, I tried following the instructions given by Cheapo, but I can't get the operating handle removed. Am I right in assuming the bolt can be removed while the action and barrel are still in the stock??

Practice...

kgs,

Cheapo is right, the bolt will come out with a little wiggling. I had a difficult time removing the bolt the first time while keeping the barreled action in the stock. For me, it took some practice, but now I can pretty much do this on the first try.

You are correct in your assumption that you can remove the bolt while keeping the barreled action in the stock.

Hope this helps a little,
Jim

Bolt remaoval

kgs, yes as the others have alluded to.
Pull the op rod straight back, and lift "UP", on it and out, kinda at an angle .
Make sure you lift up on it in the semi circular slot on the reciever..........
To re-install make sure the roller on the bolt is in the groove on the op rod, and pull back, to the semi circ again, and push "IN", and straighten up the rod, while holding it against and into the semi circular milled out cut........
