M1A, back from the range.. Impressions

Well, I'm back from the range, having taken my M1A, Betty, out for a ride.

Well, the sights I haven't quite figured out, but at 100 yards, the metal targets plinked everytime. It was a joke to shoot at 100 yards with the iron sights! The gun is accurate as hell.

I changed the top handle to a fulton made one, and it helped quite a bit. I've handled the regular plastic top, and the barrel got too hot. The fulton one was good. It was hot, but still within handling temps.

I also put a buffer technologies recoil buffer in there. The gun is a pussy cat! Accurate, easy to shoot, I love my gun!

My only complaint is that the tip, where the gas charge and the barrel meet, the finishing is all bumpy. I'll take a picture and post it, I'm thinking of talking to Springfield about it. I don't think I should pay that much for a gun, with a bad finish like that. It's looks like goose bumps on the metal.

It's weird, my clusters at 100 yards was better than my clusters at 25 yards!

I'm envious! I like my AR but sometimes we don't get along as well as I would like! I love M1As and I'm thinking about selling the old poodleshooter and picking one up. Just curious, how much are good M1A 20 rounders and where can you buy them at? If I can get mags at a good price it'll make me even more likely to go for the M1A

Thanks

Dan

Twoblink, Congrates on the day at the range....Wish i would have gone. As for the iron sites, it is my understanding that they were just intended for battle and hitting a big target way out. I am having a heck of a time with them on my M1A and a couple Ar's also. I guess I need more trigger time :)

Ronin, As for Mags.....check the SALE FORUMS at www.ar15.com and www.assaultweb.net for some great deals from fellow shooters. Or Coles Distributing or www.ar15mags.com

I guess I will be getting me a new Bolt gun soon, Savage 10fp and already ordered a stock. Like I need another rifle....Soon i shall need a truck just to get to the range

Good Luck

Karsten

The mags are a bit on the expensive side. The 10 Rounders are about $40. At least that is what I paid. Ouch... BUT, I did find out that I can put 11 rounds in them, a bit tight though. You have to assist the slide in sliding in the first round.

I have shot AR15's, and they are accurate. But this thing is seriously easy to shoot. No effort at all! The iron sights are amazingly accurate. With a recoil buffer, the recoil is not that much more than a stock AR15.

Ronin, an M1A is never a bad buy. No regrets.

I bought the Scout Squad a couple of weeks ago.

Very nice shooter with little recoil. I wonder if a buffer is worth it. I`m still looking for a forward mount scope. I ordered the scope kit from S/A for $99 but I don`t know if I`ll use it.

If you cannot wait for the 20 round magazines, check out www.cole-distributing.com $31.95 each for a USGI 20 rounder. If you have the National Match version than the gas cylinder will be a National Match part as well.

On most M1As, if you run the rear sight twelve clicks up from bottom that will give you a 250 meter zero ( I think eight clicks from bottom is the 100 meter setting). This is effectively a 300 yard point blank range setting. You will hit the target within five inches high or low of the point of aim out to 300 yards. This is known as a battle zero. It is not unusual to hear stories of a .308 grouping tighter at 200 yards than at 25 yards. It is part of getting to know your honey. ;)

M1A/M14A1

Years ago, when I was a puppy and a green anphibious monster, (U.S.M.C.) we were issued the M14A1 rifle. Every year we had qualification and we would shoot 200 meters, 300 meters and out to 460 meters (500 yds) At 460 M we were shooting at two man size standing targets. If I remember right we had 15 mins. to fire 10 shots (5 on each target). Well, once and only once did I clean the 460 meters. I was advised that one group of 5 hits could be covered with your hat and the other 5 layed out from the target's chin to belly button.
So, that is just how good the design of the M1A/M14A1 is. There is a lot of potential in them rifles.
And yes, I do have a M1A.

Clem, can you do me a favor, and tell me if your M1A, at point where the gas tube ends towards the muzzle size, if the fit and finish is good? Mine is really rough, and I'm unhappy about that. It doesn't effect performance one bit, but I'm still unhappy none the less..

My gun store owner, he was in 2 armies; Taiwan, and US. He said that the qualifications where 100, 250, and 400. He said he was a pretty good shooter, and during qualifications, this is what he did;

zeroed at 250. Aimed at the "crotch" area for the 100 yard, and it hit the chest. Aimed at the chest at the 250, and it hit the chest. Aimed at the head at 400, and it hit the chest. He said with this method, he was able to hit a 6" chest area at all 3 distances, without changing zero's.

So I guess if he's hitting a 6" cluster for 5 shots at 400 yards, I've got nothing to complain about as far as accuracy...

Albert.
