M1A and M-14 receiver question

Not too sure of the differences here, but what is the difference between the M1A and a M-14? And does anyone know where to get just the stripped receivers?

I think I am about to build one for my personal use. Rumor has it I may be able to get parts relatively cheap if I can get a receiver to build off of.

It's nice to have gun nuts for friends.

Are either of these rifles illegal in California?

A real M-14 receiver will have the cuts for the selector switch, the M1A will not. M1A is the Springfield name for their copy of the M-14. M-14 receivers are forged, M1A's are cast. The M-14 receivers are nice, but alas, considered machine guns, and therefore evil. They're being cut in half by your Big Brother. There are a few companies out there welding them back together and calling it good (MKS comes to mind) but the last I heard, they weren't selling any more receivers because the ATF was investigaing the concept. Many smiths like the M1A receiver despite the cast receiver, and is considered "not much to worry about, if anything." consider some of the chi-com receivers as well, as they're forged, and with a little work, come out nice...cheap too!

M1A is just a trade name.

Copyrighted by Springfield, Incorporated, in Geneseo, Illinois. It's their semi-auto version of the U.S. Rifle, Caliber 7.62mm, M14. Anybody else who builds a semi-auto M14 clone cannot use the M1A nomenclature for fear of Springfield, Inc's product infringement lawyers. So, when Armscorp in Baltimore, Md sells their version, it's marked either M14NM or M21 on the receiver. The imported Chinese rifles were marked M14SA. And so forth...

Then there's the real, honest-to-goodness, selective-fire, USGI M14. NFA weapons, but they're out there, if you have the money and transfer paperwork accomplished.

Agreed with Karsten. Don't have Joe Shmoe to build it. Either buy a Springfield, an Armscorp, or have Smith Enterprises or Fulton Armory to build it.

Actually, if you REALLY want a great M-14, buy all the good parts, and send it to Hook Boutin...he's the M-14 MAN. Even Fulton and Smith cannot dispute that.

:( Thanks for answering my questions. I guess they are a bit out of my price range. Although I wouldn't mind running across one of the foreign maunfactured ones.

Sure would be nice to have though.

If I were to get one, I would do build it myself and hope for the best. I am not willing to shell out $1300 or more for any rifle, no matter how nice it is.

Guess for now I will stick with my non-GI 30 carbine and Savage 10 FP. Once I leave California I will get an AR-15 (hope it's soon).

On military pay it isn't easy to keep up with some of you guys with money burning your pockets.;)

Yeah, I saw the post, I am waiting to hear more about the deal. I won't spend much more than $200 for a stock, at least not for a $400 rifle.

Hey Glockster,
Here is a deal, www.sarcoinc.com and check out the virtual catalog and military long guns. They have M-14's from Armscorp for $995.00
Now as for stocks for the Savage...Geez, I checked McMillian and they want anywhere from $360 to 650. for a stock
I may have to go laminated wood for a good heavy stock for about $250 from some place I found but will have to find again on the net.
