MIKE14, the front band is tack welded to the gas cylinder at the top (as it would be in place on the rifle). This prevents the front band from moving around. I have a pre-ban standard M1A with all GI parts including a TRW barrel. It was shooting (I hate to admit this) 4" to 5" groups with Portugese surplus and 3 1/2 " groups with handloads at 100 yards. I refused to believe the rifle was so inaccurate. I replaced the front sight with a NM sight. I installed a unitized NM gas cylinder and NM gas piston. I shimmed the gas system, backed off on the flash suppressor set screw and locked into place with the castle nut, shaved the front end of the handguard for a loose fit in the front band and greased the receiver rails, bolt lugs and bolt roller.
This rifle is now AWESOME. I am now the weak link in shooter, ammo and rifle. Using handloads I have grouped 1 3/8" and 2 1/2" (horizontal line - I'm canting) using Portugese surplus at 100 yards. I can consistently hit targets out to 740 meters using iron sights and surplus ammo. I have not tried any distances further than 740 meters.
For the M1A, it is a matter of love. Spend the money to get the better parts. I am glad I did. I am using a chrome-lined GI barrel. You may not see as great an improvement with the loaded model but the modifications do help IMHO.
