M1917 evaluation criteria

I'm looking at M1917s and was wondering if the two metal "posts" in front of the receiver should be flush with the wood, slightly above, or what.

What posts?

There are no "metal posts" that I know of. I think Armymutt might be looking at the handguard rivets which go through the wood and hold the metal handguard clip in place. The round heads are about level with the wood, but the depth can vary depending on the rivets and whether the wood is original size or has been sanded or shrunken.

The handguard ring won't be "two posts" unless it has been cut off at the top.
