M1917 Eddystone Trigger Surface

So while rummaging through my collection of milsurps today I noticed that my M1917 Eddystone (circa July 1918) has what I can only describe as a rough trigger face. There are 3 grooves cut running vertical on the face of the trigger. It seems a though someone wanted to make it extra, for lack of a better term, "grippy".

I've shot it before and had it out many times before but it didn't strike me until just today that this might be an oddity.

Anyone know what this could be?

That's factory, not an aftermarket job. The Remington and Winchester M1917s I have here in the shop are the same way.
