M16 .22lr conversion kit

All these full auto threads lately are making me feel bad about not being about to afford to shoot my M16 as much as I'd like. :(

So the question is this: can I buy any AR .22lr conversion upper kit that would work on my M16? If not does anyone make a complete (upper, bolt, mags) kit for M16's? Never really looked into converting the M16 but these ammo prices are catching up to me. :o

sure do, the ceiner kit is for ar15 or m16 but it has a splecial "balancer" or something of the sort. here....http://www.22lrconversions.com/atch-pg.htm

They're making their own version of the Ciener kit which is FAR better than the crap Jon Ciener puts out. Better machining, nickel plated finish, ball detent anti-bounce (instead of the crappy little anti-bounce weight), and best of all you don't have to deal with Ciener to get one.
 
What Shaggy said! Though I have a crappy JACkass kit in my Spike's upper it runs like a top. I don't hardly ever shoot 5.56 anymore, unless I'm introducing a 'virgin' to FA fire...
 
It's about 750 RPM, I got pretty accurate with the 5.56 so the .22lr shouldn't be too bad with practice.

When I'm dumping 30 rounds downrange in 1.5 seconds, accuracy is the least of my worries...:D

Be sure to specify that you need the M16 kit. They ship standard with the semi kit. Also, be sure to specify that you want the Spike's bolt, not the JACkass bolt.
 
That's why I got it. I've been stockpiling .22lr for some time now. At this point, I have enough to start, finish and win a war with a small country...:rolleyes:

Don't forget to order a pile of Black Dog mags with that upper...
 
Are there any Pre-Ban Black Dog mags?

I've also been wanting a .22 upper for my M16, but have had trouble sorting out which mags are available for which uppers. I need to have Pre-Ban mags, as I live in MA. :barf:

Yes, I can have a machine gun, but not post-ban hi caps. :(
 
There's no pre-ban BlackDog mags, but since those mags are made to fit a Ciener-type .22 conversion, you could use the original 30rd Ciener steel mags, which should be all pre-ban. They used to be quite pricey - around $50-60 each from Ciener - but possibly you might find a better deal as most people can use the less expensive (and somewhat more reliable) "no-ban" BlackDog mags.

Yup. Spike's was originally using kits they bought from Ciener for their .22 uppers. Now they are manufacturing their own .22 conversion for their uppers, which is basically a Ciener kit made by a better manufacturer (Spike), with a few nice upgrades (upgraded firing pin, nickel plating, better machining). The original steel mags hold 30, but in my experience, get significantly less reliable after you pass 25.

I have 0.00% working experience witht the steel Ciener mags, but I do own around 40 of the Black Dog mags, both the originall skinnys and the full size. The skinnys reliably feed every one of the 30 rounds and the full bodies reliably feed all of the 27 rounds for me in both semi and full auto. FWIW last I looked the new Cieners were $79.99 each whereas the BDMs can be had for $27...

I'll have to talk with The Warden about releasing funds for one of these.

I'm thinking a Spike's Tactical 10" flattop with a red dot would be pretty tasty. :cool:
 
I'm not a big fan of the conversions, if they utilize the existing AR barrel. The barrel twist is not designed to shoot a 22LR bullet with much accuracy.

If you have a real M16, then you should consider a dedicated 22LR upper. I own two of the CZ v22 uppers. As a matter of fact, I have one for sale.

Model 1 Sales and Spike Tactical also sells uppers. They'll run about $450 to $550. They use a modified Ciener bolt.

The CZ upper will not run on an M16 lower. The bolt has no provision for a sear trip. I am also no fan of the drop-in conversions for use in your existing FA M16 setup. If you'll notice, this thread was started asking about a dedicated upper conversion...
