There is a cool picture and short explanation about a prototype of the M14 (T-22 ??? I don't have it in front of me right now). It looks like it is still the 30-06 cartridge and M1 Garand gas system, but has the M14 magazine system and full-auto system. I bet that guy shooting the rifle has a fun job!

"Reporting for duty Sir!"

"Here. Take this rifle and shoot the hell out of it!"

"Yes Sir!!!"

I have an M1A (prolly buy another, the "Scout").

Although purists will hate me, I kind of wish I had the OPPOSITE - 308 Garand with M14 gas system.

Reasons:

Clip-feed system is "cool". And very quick, and the clips can be kept fully loaded up.

Old gas system is not so cool (with diverse ammo).

If you go to Springfield Armory National Historic Site

you'll see one of those T20s on display. The problem they encountered with it was unreliable feeding while in full auto mode. Garand suggested they lengthen the receiver 1/4" so as to give the bolt more space & time, thereby allowing the BAR magazine an opportunity to push up a fresh cartridge. The alternative was to modify the BAR magazine to feed more reliably. However, in view of the purpose of standardizing the magazine with that of the BAR, this was self-defeating. Remington engineers solved the problem by introducing a impeder in the op-rod spring. The T20 would have been a great rifle, except for the nonsensical thought of givin a lightweight gun full auto capability.

Battler, I recommend you try to find a Beretta BM59/62 which is an improved shortened garand with a box magazine. Check out Reese Surplus Inc. as they have a few in stock. Great guns and superb battle rifles.

BTW, Does it bother anyone else that Comrade Klinton sent most of our M14s to the Balkans - and not for our troops either?

mcshot: The Beretta doesn't take Garand clips, does it? That's what I meant, updated gas system; but takes Garand clips.

I'll get to see one soon though - the range guy where I shoot has one on order.
