M1 Grande scope mount

I have a M1 Grande SER# 544XXX with a scope mount on it.
The scope mount is a two piece. The base is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top piece w/(rings and scope) is removable and slides off the base. I found some numbers and the following on the top piece:

FSN 1240-xxx-xxxx
Mount Telescope
Griffin and Howe, INC.
U.S.

The scope is a 4X32 "Monoscope".
I have two questions that I was hoping someone could help with.
First, is this mount an aftermarket mount or was it installed by the Armed Forces?
Second, Does anyone know what this rifle is worth?
I doubt that I will ever sell it but the person I leave it to might, and they should know what they have.
 
I believe your rifle (assuming it came with the mounts and scope) is the USMC version of the M1C sniper rilfe. It had the Griffin and Howe mount (the FSN means federal stock number)
The rifle normaly came with the Kollmorgne Rifle Scope 4XD. The rifle, if in orginal shape would have either a cone or pronged flash hider. Also it would have to be a Korean War ventage as the Marines didnt adopt the M1C/Ds until 1951.

Most (Army and Marine) M1Cs and Ds came with the M84 telescope which was 2.2 Power and if I remember right was made by Lvman.



This is just my guess, if you can post a picture, we could probably tell you more about the rifle.

When I frist started running sniper schools for the National Guard, we used the M1C/D. You'd be suprise at the accuracy of these rifles in good hands.

We made consistant long range shots up to 1100 yards using M72 30 cal match ammo. Yeah people are gonna tell me thats way beyond the Max Effective Range, and it is, but I had some pretty good students who could pull it off.

We replaced the M1s with the M21, which in my opinion is probably the best sniper system out there. (That statement will catch some flac also--- So Be It)

That dosnt appear to be the Kollmorgen scope. The elev & windage knobs on the Kollmorgen were toward the front of the scope, should fit just behind the front ring.

That is the same G & H mount used on the Marine Sniper M1s.



There should be a date stamp on the barrel, the USMC used barrels stamped 1951,52 & 52.

The G&H mount was sold as surplus and several were mounted on M1s.

The flash hider may have been removed, they didnt really work well.
 
Where on the barrel would I find the date stamp?
And What will the format be?

Date stamp

The stamp will be where the op-rod goes into the stock, on the barrel, slightly in front of the receiver. Ex.. SA 12-53 More numbers after.
 
No such luck. The barrel is marked SA 10-42. It also has some other markings but I'm not sure what they mean.

The "34" is inverted.
