M1 Garand GI Front Sight

Is there a good method I can use to evenly file down the front sight ? I am trying to get back 5 to 6 clicks of elevation. I bought an after market GI sight as not ruin the original

Im assuming I could apply some light cold bluing after im done

Even on the top of the front sight post?

Just eyeball it looking through the peep sight. It is even when it looks even to you.

My 2 M1s have 9 clicks up for 100yd zero with my own handload. I will have to file the front sight down by 0.025" to bring it down to 5 clicks. Naw too much work. I leave them alone.

Matte black is the best color for sight. Blackening with candle soot is the old school method. I just use the cheap spray paint from home Depot. Make a mask by poking a hole in a piece of paper to cover the other parts of the rifle. A squirt or two will do. It works better if the sight post is degreased first.

Scribe a line front and back. Got a stone that fits between the two blades? Put sight upside down and on the stone and push. Stone may be mounted in a vise to keep it stable.

I'd rather put it in a milling machine and do it with precision.
 
Cutting down the front sight

Remember that the with M1 sight radius .008" equals 1 MOA, so 5--6 clicks would take. 040" to .048" of metal removal.
 
You could probably find either a mill file or a square jeweler's file near or a little over the width of the sight post and sandwich it between two tongue depressors in a vice so that the edges of the tongue depressors stuck out an eighth of an inch or so above the filing edge to keep the post on track while stroking the sight toward the file handle. You'd still have to keep the inverted sight base parallel to the vice jaws by feel, but it is doable.
