M1 Carbine

I am interested in buying a M1 Carbine in average "shooter" condition and I wanted to know what a fair/going rate for these carbines are now a days.

I bought one about 6 months ago for $350. It is all GI parts, with a Springfield receiver. Suggest you avoid the new non-GI clones. A used GI is generally better than a new clone.

sigmund, check again - Springfield never made Carbines. $350 is an excellent price in today's market for USGI... irregardless of make. -- Kernel

Okay, I think the disconnect is your talkin' the civilian Springfield Armory, Inc. in Geneseo, Illinois. I was referring to THE Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts - the old National Armory that was closed in the 1960's (another one of Robert McNamara's bright ideas). IIRC SAI made/imported/rebuilt a Carbine for a while. If it was new it probably has a cast receiver, not that it matters much, the Carbine is way over built anyway. The last USGI Carbines were made in 1945... it's been 56 years and they're still the best. -- Kernel

I have a USGI model and one made by Universal. The USGI is an outstanding rifle but the clone isnt bad at all. A USGI in VG condt will run around $350 and a clone in same condt, $200.

Springfield makes a very good M1 receiver. Several companies built rifles using these receivers along with new old stock GI parts. They make for a very nice rifle. They are 100 time better than the clones and cheaper than original GI rifles in same condition.

I've heard mixed reviews on the Universal models, but the IAI model 888 carbine gets nothing but RAVE reviews from everyone who shoots 'em. They run around $300 methinks.

The IAI is superb. I bought the basic model and am shooting USA,PMC and American Eagle FMJ. Accuracy is excellent with 50 yard groups touching.

seems to me if you looking for a good plinker get a mini 14.brand new 450 bucks ,.223 better round than the .30 cal carbine.i was eyeing a m1 carbine made by IBM. it was very cool and small but at 400 bucks and no guarentee it even worked i chose the mini.very similar in size.my mini is a late 70 model so its all wood stocks no plastic top as on the newer ones so as you can see it really looks like an m1 carbine.

I have the IAI M1 carbine and love it! The parts are cheap and high cap mags are plentiful at almost give away prices. These are NEW manufacture. Price hovers around $400 actually. I love my mini-14 now that I modified it somewhat in the past few years. Hope that this helps......DAROGUE1

I just got back from the gunshow with a cherry 1943 Rockola M1 Carbine. I dropped $500 on it, but I think it was well worth it...the rifle is mint, and the accessory kit is original and has date stamps to match the rifle. It has the butt pouch for 2 magazines, the oiler and the sling...all original stuff, not reproductions. The IAI ones were going for a little less than that, but I figured the extra money would be well spent on a piece of shootable history. Man, those things are neat...could have gotten an AK and a buttload of mags for that kind of money, but this one is far more stylish.

Welcome to the M1 Carbine family! Did you pick up mags and ammo? How much did they run in your area? You will enjoy the carbine it is a hoot to shoot low recoil and just plain fun....Enjoy........DAROGUE1

yes sir fireforged.seems like were shootin the poop on these sites anyhow.so what if the topic drifts here and there.geeeeshh.lighten up !

I took my M1 Carbine out to the range yesterday and shot a hundred rounds of .30 through it without a problem. That thing is a blast to shoot, and the fact that I can bring it to my local indoor range on rainy days is an added bonus.

I got two 15-rounders with the rifle, and picked up an extra 30-rounder for $17.95 at the gun show. Now I need to get a few more of those 30-rounders. I got 200 rounds at the show, and half of it is gone already...time to go shopping for deals on .30 Carbine.

Side note: That little rifle packs a lot of ready-to-go firepower with the 30-rounder in place and the two 15-round mags in the butt pouch. 60 rounds on tap...that's not bad at all.

I have a .30 Carbine made by Universal also, and it is a good shooter. I would have prefered to get an USGI model, but I inherited this one from my father the same week the guy finished my USGI model. I opted not to buy the USGI and honestly I think I am better off with the Universal, just simply due to the sentimental value.

If you buy a Universal, make sure it is the first version they produced, because the second generation doesn't accept most USGI parts. At least that is what I hear. Mine is from the first generation.
