Take a look at this. I just got my first M1 Carbine. Never looked close at the sling attachment method on the rear stock, but I gave it a try anyway. Is this right, or is it backwards, or does it need another piece?
You are missing a piece. Looking down from the top, with the butt facing you, the sling end goes through the slot from left to right, loops around *the oil container* then goes back through the stock to the buckle. The oiler, with the sling loope around it, fits snugly in the slot on the right side of the stock.
You are missing the oiler, a steel bottle a couple inches long and about 3/8" in diameter that fits crosswise in a loop on the sling then you pull like heck to get it to go into the slot. I've also heard (but never tried) that an empty 30/06 case will work in place of the oiler. HTH
Thanks guys. That was my first suspicion. I went through parts' list after parts' list looking for something relating to a sling, but never dreamed it was an oiler. Now I know what to order.
BigG - thanks for the heads up on the 30-06 casing. I have plenty of them around here and it worked.
Is it an actual oil can, for holding oil, or is the name 'oiler' derived from some other application? Just curious...
Here's the 30-06 shell in action, looks so cool I may keep it that way :
The M1 Carbine oiler is a steel cylinder with a steel screw cap, which, when unscrewed has a steel rod, kinda like an old merthiolate bottle, so you can put that one drop of oil just where you want it. I don't know of anybody who has ever used the oiler once it's in the stock, it usually stays there.
