M1 Carbine question??

Just received an "oiler" and a sling for my carbine, and have no idea how to use the oiler. What kind of oil do I put in it, and what do I oil with it??

I know how to mount the sling.

Used to have 300 of them, yes at one time. Uncle Sam thought he owned them, but actually I had possession :D. OK OK they were stored in our armory. Well each one had a sling and of course the oiler held it in place. I am yet to this day to see oil in any one of them. What would I oil? Damnif I know.

I assume they were intended for oiling the bolt lugs, but like others, I never saw any oil in any of them. WWII vets I have spoken with say the same thing. Mostly troops used the little oil cans that fit in the cartridge belt or pack, or the big oil cans that the armorer had on hand.

If stuck for something to hold the sling, a fired .30-'06 case works fine.

come on guy's. just put breakfree or your favorite oil in
it and oil the bolt lugs caming area and maybe a drop on the piston and any wear you see metal rub.

Hi, po boy,

It isn't worth the trouble of getting the thing out of the stock or having it leak all over the stock and sling. I oil things at home before/after a shooting session.

Okay, help me, Jim, please. Months ago, I ordered an M1 Carbine sling from Sportsmans' guide. I then had no clue how to attach it. From what I've gathered here, I have to have an oiler. I know I have fired .45-70 cases, and may be able to scare up a fired .308 brass. How do I fasten this?

Jim, Jim...

with all due respeck... the carbine was issued during war time. Not all carbines were built to grace your or mine or anybody's gun rack.

Specte:

The carbine sling has a loop at each end, usually closed with a lift the dot fastener, IIRC. Simply stick the loop thru the hole in the stock, insert the oiler in the loop and pull like heck.

I use my carbine for turkey and bobcat usually up a mountain
all day in fog, mist or rain all day come down before dark
and normally out 4 - 5 days no running water no electric etc. 150 plus old homeplace I don't take cleaning kits with me and use what came with the rifle, my way of roughing it I guess . makes you glad your back with some modern
conviences when you leave!!

Lubricants

I use M1 Garand grease pots for the carbine or RIG +P Stainless Steel grease. Never oil on a Garand-type bolt or the raceways. It will be flung off in cycling and will not provide enough lubrication.
