M1 Carbine, Opinions?

Well, at the local store and then at AIM I saw some 30 Cal. M1 Carbines on sale. The ones at AIM are new. Does anyone have experience with these? Would this be a suitable first gun for a woman? How is noise/recoil? At the store it handled a bit like a toy. Kind of minaturized if you know what I mean. All opinions welcome.

I can't speak for the reliabilty or operation of new models but yes the .30 carbine would be great as a first rifle for anyone. Ammo is reasonably priced, recoil is almost non-existant and it is easy to handle. My son started shooting mine when he was 9 or 10 and it's still his favorite. BTW, my carbine belonged to my dad and I was shooting it when I was 9 or 10.

8-year-old kid shot my IAI carbine and liked it

It points splendidly and is accurate enough to hit sporting clays (stationary) out to 100m. Light, easy manual of arms.

M1 Carbine.....

M1 Carbine is a great little rifle,....saddled with a 'worthless' little cartridge, IMHO. The carbine was my first centerfire rifle, and I too started shooting it when I was about 8. Great for aspiring young shooters because of its reduced size. Good sights. Very handy rifle. But, unfortunately, the cartridge is pretty underpowered.

Definately don't delude yourself that its suitable for deer.

I don't know about deer, But

A nyone I ever had to shoot with one promptly fell down and died. Of course I never shot anyone with a carbine once

i have use the M1 Carbine for Deer, and i will tell you that it will stop a Deer with one round. now you need to see that the .30-Carbine round in not like a 30-06 or a .308 it's more like a .357-Magnum so it will stop a man if you shoot him in the right spot.

For sporting use I agree the cartridge is pretty worthless as a genral purpose round, of course if you work hard enough you can find something it can work for. Killing deer and turkey with pointy sticks seems to be in vogue at the moment so surely you can find some huntng use for the carbine if you try hard enough, coyotes come to mind.

Huntings not the carbines strong suit anyway though. I've had a Winchester (GI) carbine for about a year now and can say it goes to the range more than any of my other guns. Low recoil, fast shooting, much more accurate than you would expect, fairly cheap ammo, and very easy to hit with off hand. Whats not to like? It's really about the funnest little rifle you can own I wouldn't trade mine off for anything short of Cindy Crawford.

By the way you will hear a lot of talk about how enemy troops absorbed dozens of direct hit's with M1 carbine rounds and batted them away like pesky insects. Well.. Audie Murphy likely saw more combat than about anyone who post on this board and he liked the M1 Carbine, so I'll let that speak for itself. Also Jim Cirillo(sp?) of NYPD stakeout squad fame reported that the Carbine loaded with softpoints was the only weapon (sawed off 12 gauges with buck and slugs included) that stopped everyone he ever saw shot with it instantly, no follow up shots needed. So if your thinking of using one secondarily as a defensive rifle there are at least some in the know who would'nt critisize your choice.

Basically just a great little rifle, I have no exp. with anything but the GI guns so I can't help there, but reccomend you get one while you can.

Hmmm, so it's gentle enough for a woman; strong enough for a man. ;)

I'll try and talk Marcie into getting one...any hints on how to get a lady to like to learn to shoot?

:D Good one Bam.

Actually forgot to mention the carbine is the only rifle my 5 foot nothing gal likes to shoot and is'nt affraid of. It could be the almost total lack of recoil, but I really think what they really like about it is that it fits them much better than most rifles. Imagine how uncomfortable it would be for us to fire a 16 pound rifle with 32 inch barrel and stock 4 inches too long for us. This is what most gal's feel like when thier guy takes them out shooting. The carbine also lacks the black "scary" look of the AR's

Bam Bam - Easy.

Take her to the range. Ask her if she wants to try a couple of shots. If the answer is "no", accept it for the moment and not badger her.

If the answer is "yes", and the first firearm she fires isn't intimidating or has too much recoil (M1 Carbines and AR15's are perfect for this), I'll just bet that she'll enjoy it.

Good luck!

Not to get preachy or political, but considering how close the election was this year I think all those guys who take thier wives out and hand them a light 12 gauge or .338 first time out, as joke or just to show how tough they are need to be strung up. Can you imagine how many new shooters (men too) we lose because of this nonsense. Hey thats another reason to like my carbine, it causes people to vote Republican! What a gun.

Seriously, when I took my girlfirend out the first time (she wanted to learn to shoot a revolver) I started her out with my K-22 with CB caps and told her we would work up to whatever she felt comfortable with then stop. We went through the CB's to long rifles then 38 wadcutters in my model 19 all the way to full house .357's which she thought were too much, so we backed down to .38 special +Ps where she was comfortable. You might want to try that incremental approach, it seemed to work for her.

geez, I must have a nasty girl friend :)

Vijitha just decided, being tamil, to use the gun her brothers use to
keep their part of the country autonomous - the AK-47.

Although, even she prefers the SIG 550 to the AK since the first is
much more precise.

.22s? She doesn't want them. I'm the only user of .22s here.
Regardings handguns, she has become a fan of SIGs. Here, my influence
shows through, I suspect. :)

I own a M1 Carbine made by Springfield in 40s? Its a fun plinker! But I must admit, a better rifle would be a SKS! ALOT $$$$ cheaper! and cheap to shoot. And the round is a much, better stopper! Bought a case of 7.62X39 (1000rds)on my DOOR STEP for about $92.00 bucks. The SKS is a DEAL of the century! I think. Thats why I own two.

PDshooter: the only manufacturer's of the M1 Carbine in the 1940s where, Winchester, IBM, Rock-Ola, Underwood, Inland, Saginaw, National Postage Meter, and Quality Hardware Machine Corp, and Standard Products Corp,
i'd say you have a old G.I. M1 Carbine with a new Springfield Armory M1 Carbine Receiver. now if you would like an all Springfield Armory M1 Carbine, i got an E-Mail back from Springfield and they said that the new M1 Carbine's and new M1 Garand's are going to be coming out in Fall of 2001. i'am looking to git one of the new Springfield Armory M1 Carbine's when they com out.

I'm going to pull that Carbine out of the gun safe Sunday!I'm pretty sure it said Springfield, on the reciver. My dad gave it to me 5yrs ago. He bought it, in 1962 for $15.00 through DCM? Its almost mint!

Springfield Armory???

Hey DUDE, do you mean the Springfield Armory that makes the 1911s and M14s currently? If so, what all do you know about the M1 Carbines and M1 Garands that they will be producing? If this is true, I know that they used to make some M1 Garands and I've been really wanting one lately. I hope they will be as excellent as the M1As that they currently make, because if so, I'll definitly be in line for one of each thank you!

glockjeeper: from what the guys at Springfield Armory told me, the new M1 Garand and new M1 Carbine will be available by Full 2001, and at this time they do not have a Price on they, but they will be made here in the USA and they will be as good as the M1A that Springfield make's now. and here is what they said in the fist E-Mail i got back from the,

We will be producing the M1 Garands and the M1 Carbines again. We hope to
be back in production by the end of the year or by the beginning of next
year. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact our
customer service department at 1-800-680-6866.

Springfield, Inc

i hope that help's.

I stand corrected! My M1 Carbine dose not say Springfied, on the reciver. Only on the stock are S.A&S.H.M. Ser,#3232xxx The rear sight has what looks like Sag??? end of barrel near front sight very hard to read IBM corp. Hey for $15.00 bucks and mint shape what do you want!

PD, I agree if it's mint and GI who cares, but now I'm curious. The recievers manufacturer should be marked right behind (or even a bit under) your rear sight. Somtimes if you hold it at an angle it's easier to see. If you have time you might want to check it.

Thanks, Blue Duck
