M1 Carbine manufacturers?

I am looking for a good preferably new M1 carbine. I received several (6) new in wrapper 30 round mags at a yard sale for $5 for all! I have wanted a firing version for some time and am now in the hunt. Any suggestions?

There are still quite a few around at gun shows and gun shops. A GI mixmaster (parts not all original to the manufacurer) in average condition usually goes for less than $500, while a real original Winchester (not a "restored" gun) can run nearly a grand, and Irwin-Pedersen and Rockola over that. If a dealer asks a fancy price, go elsewhere unless you learn enough to know what you are doing.

For your purposes, a mixmaster would be fine. I would avoid postwar guns like the Plainfield, Universal, IAI and others.

Stick to one by the original WWII makers: IBM, Underwood, Saginaw, Inland, Winchester, Quality Hardware, Nat'l Postal Meter, Irwin-Pedersen, Rockola,or Stnadard Products. Due to rarity, some of those are pricier than others, and of course as always, condition matters.
