M1 carbine info

I have an M1 carbine I got from my Dad . It has a custom stock on it . It is a Saginaw SG 3309844 serial # , Excellent shape ! Anyone have any info ?

Saginaw SG's are pretty collectible, a step up from regular Inland Div. (both are GM companies). Your custom stock may not appeal to everyone, but if the rifle itself has not been altered much to fit the custom stock, then a regular GI stock and handguards may be easily re-installed, restoring it to issue condition. It would be hard to value it without good pictures, and knowing if the internal parts have been removed, swapped, or replaced. I have an DCM issued Saginaw SG, and I feel it is worth about $700 or so dollars, in vg-ex condition, with some ordnance replaced parts and M2 stock.

The original contract for these M1 carbines was to Irwin- Pedersen Co. The Irwin family were furniture makers and Pedersen was an arms designer. Because they had such lousy quality control and the military was turning their rifles down due to crappy workmanship, the Saginaw Steering Gear Co took over the contract. Saginaw Steering gear was a division of GM. Because production numbers were not as high as others, with Winchester making the most, the Saginaw rifles bring a little more premium in their full military form. As modified, it's not worth much.

Actually, Inlands were by far the most numerous. Per the other's post, I'd find a good original issue stock and enjoy a piece of history!
