These manuals are probably available through Paladin Press. I see them at gun shows pretty often, as well.
But, basically, just unscrew the odd-ball looking screw at the front end of the stock and press down on the little latch gizzie while pushing forward on the clamp/bayonet lug gizzie. That leaves everything staring at you.
Fiddle around with the recoil spring and compress it while so doing and things come loose. Pull up and out on the operating rod handle, and if you hold your mouth right it separates from the bolt. Push out whatever pins are easily pushed out, and it all falls apart.
To assemble, reverse the process. I did two of them, today, for the first time in about ten or fifteen years. It's a lot simpler than rebuilding a car engine...
I bought a government manual at a gun show and read it. I was having trouble getting the action and such in the stock where it goes in at the recoil plate. They suggested that you put it in lightly then tap the butt on the ground and it should drop in. Well I tried it yesterday and it worked Before I was unscrewing the recoil plate screw and I was afraid if stripping it out. The government does know SOME things that are practical.......DAROGUE1
The best, bar none, is the new-ish Jerry Kuhnhausen book on the M1 Carbine. It's #3 in the .30 caliber gas service rifle series (#s 1 and 2 are a single volume covering the M1 and M14). Go to www.gunbooks.com. I don't think they've got this on the website yet, so you may have to call them.
