M1 Carbine A Good Choice For Urban Survival?

Just a theoretical question re: chaos erupts in major city or surrounding suburbs. Is an M1 Carbine preferable to a .45 Govt. model pistol? I've read some comments by Jeff Cooper and M. Ayoob about a lever-action carbine in pistol caliber being useful to repel boarders.

I'm thinking about buying an M1 carbine as a plinker and last-chance backup item.

Info appreciated.

Thanks, Art. I checked and found a discussion that began on 3/16/99.

M1 Carbine? Of course.
Hits like a hot .357 Magnum but easy to use and easier to hit with... Of course.

Over the .45?
Uh - try WITH the .45!

You're right George, Glock 21 in the holster, and my M1 Carbine on my shoulder. :) Actually, I think I'd probably grab the AR, but the carbine is a neat little gun, and great fun at the range.

Its not on anyone's ban list... yet.

Specifically where I live "any rifle produced before 1954" is NOT an assault rifle. And genarally it can still have its evil bayonet lug and grenade launchger sights etc etc.

Plus with its 15 shot clip it is still not "hicapacity" in many states.

Maybe its not the BEST choice, but its got a lot PC features that makes it look friendly, until you slap a 30 round bannana clip full of APIT into it.

Surplus ammo might get hard to find for this too.. since not many other guns (blackhawk, automag) were chambered to fire it.

An M-1 Carbine has been on my want-list for almost a year. My gun shop has IAI's that have the most beautiful walnut stocks I've seen on a rifle of that price. Oleg has one and I'm sure that if he sees this thread he'll have some good things to say about this great little rifle.

Have several varieties, all good guns. Make sure you have a good supply of soft point ammo on hand for " serious social work ", though.

paranoia is a good thing to have when they actually are out to get you!

I love my M-1 carbine and everybody always makes fun of it.Does anybody know of any ammo companys that sell a 110 JHP(already loaded ammo,i do not reload and i know that a few offer the 110 for those who reload)???That should really be just as good as any .357mag.

The M1 Carbine has received mixed reviews. I believe Col. John George (Shots Fired in Anger) praised it (he was a headshot type of guy) while other GIs cursed it. One of our members reported shooting into the back of a German soldier. The blanket roll stopped the bullets.

I would prefer the SKS myself over the M1 Carbine but better the carbine than a rock or stick.
