M&P question

I did a search, but didn't find any definitive answers... I've been sort of out of touch (ok, a LOT out of touch) with the AR platform for the last 7 or 8 years.
I recently heard about the M&P 15 (I'm thinking 38 special revolver here ) I got to look at one the other day, but had nobody around that was knowledgeable enough to talk to about it.
Is it pretty much standard AR specs? In other words, do AR parts, barrels, etc interchange readily with it?
To me it looks like a perfect re-entry AR platform, but I'd like to be able to mix and match if I wanted to, later on. Price is definitely an object with me, at this point, and I don't have any compulsion to go tacticool with it. I was thinking of, and looking at, the sport model.
Thanks for any advice or ideas..

Hornet; the M&P15's, other than the "Sport" model, are almost 100% Mil-Spec GI AR15. I say "Almost", because there's a lot of M&P15 sub-models. Some have the standard 1:7 barrel twist, but many of them, like my M&P15-OR has a 1:9 barrel twist. The 1:7 is mil-spec. But unless you're shooting 75 grain match grade bullets, the 1:9 twist works fine for accuracy. Also, the Bolt Carrier Group is not the Full Auto one that is Mil-Spec. It's a semi-Auto version. Then again, we aren't shooting full-auto, so that's another mil-spec part that isn't really an issue. But all in all, the M&P15's are fairly close to being as mil-spec as you can get, without having to buy a Colt, BCM, LMT, Daniel, or Noveske. And it's MUCH MORE mil-spec than a Rock-River, Bushmaster, Olympic, DPMS, and many others. If mil-spec is an issue, the M&P15's are in the Top half of all AR's.

I have the M&P15-OR. OR means OPTICAL READY. In other words, it's the same M&P15 as the others, except it has no optics/sights on it. It was designed for you to put on whatever you wanted instead of a fixed set of sights already on it. Plus, the OR has the standard forehand grips and M4 stock compared to some of the Glitter that some of the higher priced ones have. But because it doesn't have sights or bling, but it has the flat top rail, it's a lot cheaper than the other M&P15's. Normal price is around $950, but that's too high. If you shop around, there are some decent sales. And currently, S&W has a $100 rebate for military persons which you qualify for. FYI: The Rebate doesn't apply to the "Sport" version. But right now, there's the NORMAL M&P15 at CDNN on sale for $799. It has front and rear sights. Typical looking M4. It qualifies for the $100 rebate. That's a $699 gun. Not a bad price. Good luck. See you around.

thanks for the info. I don't care about bringing one up to mil-spec, I just wanted to make sure that regular AR15 parts were interchangeable in it. I was concerned that it might be like the old Ballester Molina .45 ACP that looked like a 1911, but a lot of the 1911 parts wouldn't fit it.

Now I just need to save up some shekels...

No worries. All the parts are interchangeable. Uppers, trigger, BCG, "Not the BCG you remember. LOL", etc... All interchangeable. I've had my M&P15-OR since Christmas, and have put about 4,000 rounds through it already. Excellent weapon. It will eat anything. I shoot 90% steel case russian; multiple brands. Also plenty of PMC, Remington, and mil-surplus. Keep CDNN in mind. They have good prices. I got mine on sale at Sportsman's Warehouse in Loveland. With sale and S&W rebate, final cost was $649. They're definitely out there. Best of luck. Mike.....

One more vote for the M&P 15 OR. Mine have been flawless. Yes, you can swap it out with other mil spec parts. I also picked up a Sport and besides the missing a forward assist (never used it) and dust cover (not taking my personal AR downrange) and having a different barrel, it is still a very good entry level rifle for around $599. Just for kicks, I have a M&P 15-22. It's so much fun to shoot and really cheap day at the range. If you decide to buy a M&P, you will not be disappointed.

Bought my Sport recently and put 400 of my reloads through it so far. No real issues to speak of. I actually like not having all the extra 'doodads' a normal AR comes with. Simple, basic, functional.
