M&P 15 upgrade?

I bought my s&w M&P 15 Sport a couple months ago cause i wanted something cheap i would feel comfortable letting other people shoot, and not have to worry about them dropping or scratching it. After shooting it though, i realized it operates just as nicely as my Bushmaster MOE Dissipator.

So my question is: Should i change out the upper for one with a foreword assist, or should i leave it how it is?

I can't imagine a time when you are at the range, hunting, or plinking where you would really want to use a forward assist.

I've seen them used once or twice, in the above situation....and result was a stuck cartridge in the chamber without the bolt going into battery. The reloaded cartridge usually didn't have the shoulder set back far enough. I can't recall anyone I've shot with having to use the forward assist on factory ammo. If they do....I'd guess their gun was running pretty dry at that point in time.

+1 on the let it be. No need to put money and time into something that adds weight and is 99% useless with proper maintenance.

I have used my forward assist a couple times when for whatever reason the bolt didn't go fully into battery, it was easier than pulling the charging handle back and ejecting a unfired round then slaming the bolt forward again.........just saying............but I don't think a FA is reason alone to buy a new upper:)

Forward assist is useless. If you need to use it, then there is a problem that needs to be resolved.

Well that is definately comforting. I was almost talked out of getting the S&W MP15 Sport because of the lack of a forward assist. Now that I think about it, that forward assist might be the result of overengineering. I think I may just stick with the Smith and then ill have enough money left over for ammo and accessories.

I'm still waiting on my M&P 15 Sport from a special order. Meanwhile I am enjoying my M&P 15 OR. I have never had to use my forward assist on it. Only time I have touched the forward assist is during classroom instruction in the military. Never when actually shooting. If you maintain your AR15, you also may never ever need the forward assist. BTW, if u get a chance, look forward to a range report on your Sport.

Dont forget, It was a combat rifle before we started putting rails and flashlights all over them. Im sure that forward assist has saved more lives than we can count.

I like the forward assist. However, I have no problem doing it manually with my thumb like I use to do before the forward assist came out.

Now, you might wonder why I'd need to use one. When I first came into the military in the 70's, we trained on entering hostile areas "QUIETLY". One exercise, at the wee hours of the morning; between 1am-4am; I spent more than 2 hours crawling through the knee high grass and swamp to travel 200 yards. I didn't do that crawling with a round in the chamber. When I got into position where I wanted to be, I didn't want to rack a round and let a sentry hear me. I Sloooooooowly put a round in the chamber, and used my thumb to finish the bolt forward.

The same could be said for someone who doesn't want to leave a round in the chamber because of their surroundings; e.g. little kids. If they used the rifle for home defense, they could chamber a round quietly. But again; you can use your thumb. You don't need a forward assist. In other words, it's not just for "Problems".
