M-6 Scout...

Looking for a light rifle that'll fit into a pack, lightweight, reliable, handy and capable of putting a squirrel or rabbit into the pot.
Like the concept of a rifle that weighs in at 4lbs. that can carry its own ammunition and can be stored handily in a nylon holster.
I figure the 6 oz. container of FOX Pepper Spray will save my A$$ from any bears, etc...
Like I said just looking for a light, plinker to put some small game on the fire and will fit handily in a small tight-fitting package.
Any comments on the M-6 scout?
Tried the AR-7, wasn't impressed.

I have an M6 in .22LR/.410. It's a great little gun and will do exactly what you are asking for. The 22 is surprisingly accurate. The sights are a little crude but entirely serviceable and effecive. If you don't like them you can mount a scope on it.
The "trigger" takes some getting used to but you can do some pretty accurate shooting with it all the same.
Since I bought my M6 I have "discovered" the 22 Hornet and would like to get an M6 with the Hornet barrel also. If you are a reloader you may want to consider the Hornet for it's extra power and versatility. If not the 22 will probably serve you better. It's a quality firearm that should serve you well for a lifetime.

BTW There is a company who will shorten an M6 to under 16" (barrel length that is). It is still considered a restricted firearm under NFA but it falls into the "any other firearm" catagory and I beleive is only subject to a $5.00 tax for registration. (I could be wrong on the amount but I know it is cheap)

I owned an M6 a good number of years ago, it's a much better rifle than the AR7 (the originals were very nice however) that is being produced today. Actually, when the Springfield M6s were introduced you could buy one from them with an 11" or 14" barrel (the end of the box had all the configurations listed). I passed on an original M6 with the 14" (I believe) years ago. Buy the Hornet, you'll be pleased.

I have two of the original production fron SA in .22LR/.410 and picked up the current production in .22 Hornet. As you can tell I relaly like the M6's. They are simple, rugged and are perfect for their intended purpose. They are starnge to get used to at first but they grow on you and I have found them to be a great walking/plinking gun.

Thanks for the replies. As for the .22 Hornet, I was considering it. Maybe two M-6 Scouts? One for each pack. One chambered in .22 Hornet/.410 and the other in .22LR/.410!:)
Anyway good comments, at least I know I'm on the right track. Nice "backpack" rifle.

.22 Hornet

The .22 hornet is one of my favorite caliber's, I have 7 or so weapons chambered in it. It is a great caliber but I have a hard time recommending it if you don't reload. It can be expensive to shoot especially when compared against the .22 LR.

Getting one of each is a great solution.

IF you get the hornet you should really reload your own. You'll likely get better accuracy and you will be able to tailor your loads for your intended purposes. Reloading isn't difficult and does't have to be expensive to get into. It's also a lot cheaper than buying factory ammo. If you decide to reload for the hornet let me know. I'd be glad to help you get started.

Intel6, what kind of accuracy are you getting from your M6 hornet? Have you scoped it? I think this would be the perfect rifle to throw on the mtn bike for groudhog oportunities.
