m-48 mount

I did a quick search here and on the net. I'm wondering, after visiting a couple of different websites, what might be the "best" way to mount a scope on a m-48a yugo mauser?
Is drilling and tapping the reciever thee most reliable way to hook up some Weaver mounts? Or, are one piece Redfields, Leuplods, ect. . available?

Mark, drilling and tapping is the best way. I'm not sure if the one piece bases for the 98 will be too long for the Yugo or not. I can't recall every trying that to see. George

Weaver Base?

Guys, I have studied my M-48 and it doesn't look easy to drill and tap beause the reciever in front and behind bolt opening are not the same height. There would need to be some kind of prop or shim on the back mount to make it levle with the front. How have you seen it done?

I also looked on Brownells and saw a Weaver mount that looked like it drilled into the reciever from the left side. This would leave the scope slightly offset to the left. Have any of you seen this and how does it work? Thanks for the help.

Mark, I've been known to drill one straight on occasion.

Flyboy, even though the heights are different they are parallel and so don't require any shimming. The differences are made up in the bases. Side mounts place the scope completely off to the left side taking away the need to bend/weld the bolt handle. These work very well. I've installed them on several rifles. I don't recall ever installing a weaver. I always use the Williams side mounts. George

George Stringer, Where did you get your Williams side mounts? Are they pretty simple to drill for or is it a gunsmith kind of project? Any info in this area would be helpful.

Kinda off topic but how accurate is the M-48 generally? With qulaity reloads can you get 1 MOA accuracy from a Very Good condition M-48A? I am just curious. The Mouser is definitely my favorite in looks and feel and I can't wait to find a way to scope it for a reasonable price.

George,
I'm about to order the two-piece Weaver bases for my 1938 Turk project ... are the correct bases those that Weaver lists for the 98 Mauser ... #45 in the rear and #46 in the front?

Thanks,
Saands

I was begining to think I might be somewhat off, thinking to put a scope on my m48.

Looking at my catalog, weaver 45 for the rear and a 46 for the front. I saw a set at Dicks and they are quite different.

I'm looking to get a 2 piece set of Leoplud bases. Can't find the one piece double twist base.
Douglas barrel. 1 in 10 or 1 in 12 .246 bore. Maybe. Not really sure yet. I have time to build this one.
Timney trigger.
Detactable 3 or 4 shot mag.
Hopefully a Choate stock. Don't see these yet either......

Way more that a factory gun, but this one should be worth it.
Besides I can't find a Rem 700 LA receiver for $169.00 anywhere.

Flyboy, I get them from Williams directly. 1-800-530-9028. Side mounts are a different animal and I recommend you let a smith install them. The holes are drilled into the action at a 73deg angle so unless you have an angle vise for your drill press or mill they are a little difficult to set up correctly. I've not shot a 48 with the original barrel but the ones I've rebarreled have been very accurate.

Saands, that's correct. #45 and #46.
