m 14 new or vintage

If you're looking for an M14, your options are somewhat limited. The most common ones available are the Springfield Armory M1A or one of the variants offered. There are other M1A's made by a few other companies as well.

To the best of my knowledge, there are only a VERY few transferable actual honest M14 rifles out in circulation--since they are select-fire weapons, they fall under the NFA. And, to get one of these, you WILL pay a steep tariff--if you can find one.

The early SA M1A's have more usgi parts on them, some are complete gi, bolt, op-rod and fcg. The newer ones well have commercial bolts and op-rods, they shoot the same as gi. I don't see any difference between my gi and non gi M1A's. The usgi stuff is just bragging rights.

GI and/or SEI parts are a must, all of the reproduction parts on my M1A failed before I was
able to fire 800 rounds. These parts included the bolt, extractor, op rod and trigger group.

Buy an older rifle with USGI parts or have someone like SEI custom build one for you with high quality parts.

Carbine? 18.0" and a 16.25"

To the OP-Are you talking about an M14 or an M1 carbine? The original USGI carbine is the way to go.The reproduction ones have zero collector value, and a bad track record for function.
