Police wait in vain in gun amnesty program
Saturday, August 5, 2000
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- For four hours Saturday, police waited at a local lifesaving station for convicted felons, drug dealers and drug users to turn over their guns in an amnesty program.
They might as well have stayed home. The criminals did.
"This is the final chance,'' said Lt. Mike Staley after nobody showed up. "If they didn't turn their gun in today, we'll come look for you. It's no excuses now.''
Police organized the no-questions-asked gun amnesty to raise awareness about Virginia Exile, a law that took effect in July 1999. The law sets mandatory prison terms for firearms possession by anyone with previous felony or drug convictions or for firearms possession on school grounds.
Police might try a more general gun buy-back program, Stanley said.
"That would be geared toward everyone who is looking to turn in a gun,'' he said. "Our goal is to reduce the number of weapons on the streets.''
