Police wait in vain in gun amnesty program

Saturday, August 5, 2000

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- For four hours Saturday, police waited at a local lifesaving station for convicted felons, drug dealers and drug users to turn over their guns in an amnesty program.

They might as well have stayed home. The criminals did.

"This is the final chance,'' said Lt. Mike Staley after nobody showed up. "If they didn't turn their gun in today, we'll come look for you. It's no excuses now.''

Police organized the no-questions-asked gun amnesty to raise awareness about Virginia Exile, a law that took effect in July 1999. The law sets mandatory prison terms for firearms possession by anyone with previous felony or drug convictions or for firearms possession on school grounds.

Police might try a more general gun buy-back program, Stanley said.

"That would be geared toward everyone who is looking to turn in a gun,'' he said. "Our goal is to reduce the number of weapons on the streets.''

Lynchburg is a nice town with friendly people and is the home of Mr. Falwell. FWIW. John

Wow, you mean that convicted criminals prefer to keep violating the law? Why those ... those ... those criminals!!!

While the cops were waiting on the criminals, what were the criminals doing? Avoiding the police at the gun turn-in.

I'm shocked, absolutely shocked.

To think that these people wouldn't take advantage of this...

Just shocked.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

OK I think in this case it was more about making a statement. ANd he made one. He didn't want the guns of law abiding People. He wanted the Criminals guns. He gave them one last chance.. In other words.

"If you are not a criminal have a good day. If you are a Criminal your ass is now mine"

That is how it reads to me at least.

Well meaning, ill conceived and unsurprisingly disappointing. Like the Irish saying goes, "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Wotta waste of police resources.
