Lusting for SA 1873 in California.

Never got around to get a Colt SA Army and the good Senator Feinstein has now seen to it that the fees to certify guns in California are beyond the reach of the ailing Colt company which is to say that the gun can no longer be sold here.

Not to get off on a tangent but it seems that politicians spend most of their waking moments trying to find ways to cheat us out of our constitutional rights. If only they could balance the budget with equal fervor we'd all be in better shape for it. Oh well.

Anyway here is my question: does anybody know of a "California legal" high quality replica of the Colt SA Army 1873 that I should go looking for?

The only maker of single action revolvers on the California payoff list

is Ruger. Their guns are not really replicas of Colt SAA but are about as close as you are likely to get. Ruger has recently announced the New Vaquero which is scaled down to about the same size as a Colt. Maybe they will pay to get it tested and listed.

The DOJ page says "certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement."
Might pay you to ask which single action revolvers they are talking about. Then see if a dealer knows about the exemption.

I've used the inquiry form on their website to ask the very same question Jim but no answer so far. A call to Lockyer's office (Attorney General) has not produced any results either.

My understanding was that you could purchase non-listed guns via face-to-face sales, or by bringing them into the state? Is that incorrect?

If it is the case I would go shopping in Nevada and bring home a nice one.

Ask a Cowboy. SASS uses a LOT of single actions and they are - or were - headquartered in California.

Ask and search on the SASS Wire Forum and check out the Affiliated Merchants, there are a number in Cal.

Scottauld - It is against Federal law to purchase a handgun out of state. California is very restrictive about import of guns.

Nevada dealers will not sell guns to CA residents when such guns do not comply with CA laws.

Early response from cowboy is that all single action wheelguns are exempted.

The new Vaquero in 5.5" is a fine looking gun and it would be my first choice since the Colt is about $1,000.

Single action revolvers are currently exempt from the Kalifornia hangun safety list as long as they meet some size requirements. The exact requirements escape me now, but a search of this forum (there was a thread on this a month or two ago) or asking at your local dealer should clear it up.
Colt SAA's and their clones, the Ruger Blackhawk family, and many others meet these requirements easily.
Bergwerk, I don't see a problem with scratching your itch.
