Luger Restoration

A good friend of mine gave me a Luger P08 that is in bad shape. I want to restore this gun very bad, however I cannot get the action to budge. As you can tell by the picture there is quite a bit of rust and pitting. I have had the gun soaking in kerosene for days, but nothing has loosened yet (even while tapping with a dead blow hammer). I ordered some rust away from Brownells. I'm hoping after a good soak in that I will be able to break free the rusty action. Any of you have any tips or suggestions that may help me in this process?

So I guess the magazine body will not pull out?

I figure you have already checked the chamber with a rod.

If it is empty, I would go down to Harbor Freight and buy one of their ultrasonic cleaners and try it with Ed's red.

It looks like the receiver is already pushed to the rear, so if you can get the mag out, you could tap down the sideplate lever, remove the sideplate and tap the receiver forward off the frame.
If the mainspring causes any hangups, just cut it out with a dremel.

Good luck with it, JT

Drop it in a bucket of diesel and wait a day or two, then rap rhw muzzle smartly with asoft mallet. Then disassemble as usual.

I had left a black powder revolver too long without cleaning and it rusted up.
Soaking it for a few days in automatic transmission fluid worked.
ATF cleans as well as lubes.
Doesn't Ed's Red have all the above mentioned stuff in it?
If so, that would have to be a good choice, too.

Yes, the chamber is clear. I'm going to leave it in kerosene until the rust away comes in the mail (hopefully by the Friday). Then, I'll soak the gun for a day or two in the rust away, and see if any progress is made. If it still won't budge I might try the ultra sonic cleaner and Ed's Red. I'm guessing its safe to use Ed's Red in an ultra sonic cleaner?
