Lubrication or not, that is the question...

Being new to the forum I have been searching the files for old threads related to topics of interest. Especially interesting is one in February where is discussion of merits of dry versus wet lubrication.

I've been shooting for a number of years and have gotten in to the habit a decade or so ago of just putting a light wash of Browning Oil on my guns after they are cleaned. So far so good. For a few years before that I used the Smith and Wesson formulation which had to be shaken before use, no I have no idea what was in it, no worry about synthetic versus petroleum based versus oleo versus silicone versus wax.

Is this going to do some horrible destruction? Should I be using Teflon and Castrol and other new formulations? We're not talking about industrial usage here, just a couple of hundred rounds per year for the favorites.

What lubricants are most people using and why?

I use DSX grease on my revolvers and semi-autos.

Why? Because it works. It stays where I put it (unlike oil, which can flow away due to the effects of gravity, leaving the parts you want to be lubricated unlubricated.

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

BreakFree CLP, because it works in ALL temperature extremes, and does NOT gunk up as the gun gets dirtier (and dirtier and dirtier LOL).

My carry gun is NP3'ed...

If you are not shooting very often, then I would say that after a thorough cleaning, a light coat of oil will be fine. The key will be storing your guns in a place that is low in humidity and fairly stable in temperature. I believe any of the newer gun oils will be fine. Something that won't evaporate (slowly evaporte) over time will be ideal, otherwise the left over residue will leave your gun sticky and could hamper function...
