Lube for slides/rails.

In a reply to a thread a short time ago, 1911 posted a URL that has probably the best cleaning instruction i have ever seen. I got it printed out and ready for the boys in the cabin.

Now, lubrication of slides and rails. I have used about everything and found price means nothing as relating to worth. I used to use RIG but the last tube I got seemed to be "greasy" instead of "slippery". Didn't wipe off well and seemed to pick up crud. Trial and error of many products, settled on "Lock-Ease". Okay, but not nice to apply, spray/splatter all over the kitchen.

Watched a guy spraying something all over a jack-leg sawmill operation. Blade, chains, rails, everything! This is what it was.

SLIP PLATE

I got some from a Farm Supply store and it is great! It is in an aerosol can and is a graphite dry film lubricant. Leaves a no-nonsense gray color and works fine. It is made by Superior Graphite, Chicago , IL 60606.

It doesn't say anything about guns on the can but you know anything good enough to use on corn pickers, snowblowers, manure spreaders (home use, no kidding - its on the can) and - get this - solar panels, worth a try eh?

Seriously, i have used a lot of stuff on firearms and fishing equipment and this stuff seems good for everything. I am going to spray the chute on my snowblower with it in just a little while and get at the driveway.

TESTED

When in doubt, BreakFree CLP.

I use TetraGease when I use grease, but if it's 17 below zero I'm using BreakFree.

Kano Labs sells similar products. They have a graphite lube called Dryphite and a molybdenum lube called Molyfilm. They are available in regular and aerosol containers.

A Note On Graphite Based Products

Graphite will corrode aluminum, so watch what you use it on. AR rifles and aluminum framed pistols come to mind.

As for Tetra, I used it for many years - just got tired of the stench.

Tried TW25B and that has the same stench as the old Tetra.

I use Neco MolySlide now.

Tetra

Isn't that the lube that smells like a wet horse? I had to stop using it too. If the smell didn't give away the fact that I was carrying a gun it just plain offended people, including me!

Tetra grease and a small model paint brush. Run on a thin bead of grease and then use the brush to spread a thin sheen on rails, sears, lugs, anything that rubs on anything else.:)

The very best lubricant I ever used was Zero Friction in the needle oiler bottle from Pro-Shot Products. The design of the bottle was important because it allowed you to place just one drop of oil exactly where you wanted it. Unfortunately, they have recently repackaged the oil in a spray can and the needle oiler bottle is no longer available. I've been trying to convince them to either go back to the needle bottle or sell the oil in bulk so that the user could put it into his own bottle. Give them a call at 217-824-9133. Maybe if enough people request it, they will be moved to do something.

I`ve been using Slide Glide lately. It does stay put and does not dry/run out.

Just a tiny bit is all you need. Too much oozes all up and through the gun making a gooey mess when you break it down to clean it.

It attracts and holds carbon like a magnet. Another reason not to use too much. I think it`s better than oil for slides. On the barrel bushing I use Mobil 1.

I haven`t checked, but it resembles grease you use on ball joints. I wonder....

Outers gunslick ( little tube of black graphite lube, mildly abrasive so breaks in and polishes) during break in then Fiskes' lubriplate on the slide rails(Genie garage door screw drive lubricant is the same thing made by fiske). Mobile 1 synthetic 15w50 on the hammer, trigger and inside the frame moving parts. Oh and don't forget the mobile one on the exterior barrel and slide guide/cam block. Real slippery and smooth. Brass ejects in a neat little pile way over my shoulder
