Hi eveyone, I was wondering whats the lowest recoil 38 special round, i could buy for plinking in my 357. I dont reload so they would be store bought, probably in win, fed, or rem. Does it matter slug size ? also ive heard something about leading in uncoated rounds, is this a problem ? thanks everyone i look forward to your input.

I think there are several outfits out there that have 30 wad cutters, loaded pretty light, I saw some the other day in a large Sporting Goods store but dont remember the name (wasnt paying attention since I load my own).

I'm sure contacting one of the big outfits would line you out.

Check www.mastercast.net. They have a 100gr WC that has the recoil and sound of a .22! I've fired 500 of them and found them to be accurate at ten yards, though they tend to tear strips from some targets -- not keyholing. I have fired about six thousand of Mastercast's reloads without a single problem. Prompt, reliable and inexpensive. They would be particularly inexpensive if you exchanged your spent brass (same type and quantity). I send the a thousand cases by USPS Priority Mail for nine bucks and change. Any other way I know of costs more than twenty.

Cordially, Jack

Isn't anything less than +P pretty low recoil? In any case, I would think the lighter bullet weight loads would produce less recoil... all else being equal.

Lowest recoil .38 I've had the pleasure to fire has been Sellier & Bellot 148gr wadcutters. Nice, consistent, accurate round.

Agree. The primers are a little hard but it's a beauty to shoot all day. Inexpensive also.

+1 on jaydubya's suggestion for the 100gr WC's from mastercast. My wife started shooting these out of an airweight .38 with no problems. In my S&W 28-2 they feel like .22's.

+10 on MasterCast

I also need to second Jack's vote for MasterCast. They are great people to deal with, and their ammo is great. I just wish they would reload 9x18 Mak's.

I would warn you though, that on my last order, they were only accepting exchange brass orders... that is, you have to send them 100 empty shells to get 100 rounds. They are low on brass.

www.mastercast.net You won't be unhappy!

Hmm, USAC put out a 38 special round a while ago that was a 158 grain wadcutter or semi-wadcutter in a plastic case. They included instructions for reloading them and it used something like 2 - 2.5 grains of powder. VERY light with almost no recoil.

I have not seen anything like this available today but it is ideal for practice.

Although any of the lightly loaded WCs would work, I can also attest to how light those 100 gr WCs from MasterCast.net shoot. In both my 686 as well as SWMBO's model 15 they are just about as light shooting as .22s. The accuracy isn't bad, either.
