Lower rings, or Cheekpiece- 1895guide scout

On a Marlin Guide Gun 45/70 with AO base for Leopold scout scope. I am currently using Leupold quick release rings-
The problem is the scope is a bit too high for a good cheek weld and fast target aquisition. So i think i have 2 choices...either a lower set of rings (are the weaver medium lower? or what is lower), and the second choice is to get/make some kind of cheekpiece to raise me cheek-weld position.
Which do you guys suggest doing, and what would be some good ring suggestions - or cheekpiece options? Thanks yall.

In the February 2001 edition of American Rifleman, pg. 41...

...is an article about the .450 Marlin Guide Gun. They have the exact optical setup you have. Same mount, scope, and rings.

A quick excerpt talking about how the mounts and 28mm objective allow it to be mounted very low:

"...there is no need to lift your head off the stock to obtain a proper sight picture."

Are you sure you aren't getting a good cheek weld? Are your groups really big or are you saying this from just shouldering it in your living room?

From the pictures, it looks like the scope could only drop another 1/4 inch or so before it hit scope mount.

If your groups really are opened up from lack of a good cheek weld, then I would have to concur with your originals thoughts. A strapon (or homemade foam and tape job) cheekpiece seems to be your best option.

Have not shot it yet, but as soon as the rain stops ill go calibrate it. The problem isnt with big groups (from an off center parallax problem). I can get it sighted in well, but the stock would then be welded too low on my jaw, rather than right under/against the cheek bone. Yes the scope is pretty low, but the iron sights line up perfectly for the stock, and the scope is a good .4" higher, and i want that extra .4" or so to make the weld perfect for 'fast target aquisition.'
I have a steyr scout and love how fast it shoulders on a target, and i want the same thing.
+I think the weaver rings may give me another 1/8 of an inch or so, but dont know for sure- can anyone comment on this-
and the qustions is, if i was buy/make a cheekpiece, does anyone have any suggestions on where or what to buy, or ideas on how to make a quality peice. THanks again

If you only need 0.4" then lower rings are worth a try.

Or a strapon cheek piece from Eagle Ind. would work. They make one that I bought a couple of weeks age that has a zippered pouch and loops for 5 extra rounds on the other side.

Goodluck.

I think im all set-

I do think the weaver rings may be 1/8" lower but not really enough, so im going for the cheekpiece. I checked out Eagle Ind and also saw BlackHawk ind has something too for me. I have a cupon for BHI so may go that way, but its a coin toss for now.
Thanks for the help IB- out
