Low-cost Browning Hi-Power Clone?

I am greatly enamoured of a Browning H-Power in 9mm. Or rather, I just plain lust after and covet one of these pistols!

Anyway, at $700 (!!!) it's like light-years out of my price range. Is there a similar, good quality, reliable pistol at a more reasonable price that I should look for? or, would do better with a revolver? Smaller pistol? SA? DA? DAO? Shotgun?

I'm looking to get a CCW permit one of these days and to use it for personal/home defense, as well as recreational shooting. Before anyone suggests it, I've got the NAA Black Widow Mini-revolver on the wish list already!

On another note: I have considered the 9mm vs. .40 or .45 question, and for me the 9 is just much easier to shoot. An' I figger that's purty important when one is in a hi-stress situation! And one (this 'one', to be specific) would probably be more inclined to practice with it!

TIA! :)

The FEG hi power is very compariable to the browning and everyone seems to have real good luck out of them. The cost on them are between $200 - $250.

There are FEG HP clones out for around $200. For $340 there is the legendary CZ75. Used Sig225's, Ruger P95/97. Well I guess I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of reliable guns that don't cost a ton. Maybe the Mak would suit you.

I have an Arcus bulgarian highpower. Very accurate, nice tight barrel to slide and slide to frame fit. Trigger was crisp but a bit heavy out of the box, changed the hammer spring with a lighter one from wolff springs. Now it's real nice. Lots of parts will interchange with a standard highpower including the grips. There are two of them up for bid at www.auctionarms.com. One starts at $225 the other one is $235.

There was an article in Guns&Ammo a couple of years ago about an Arcus 94. It is a Bulgarian made Hi-Power. The article said it look great, shoots great, and is equal, or better then than the Browining. I havent seen them at any gun stores I have gone, but if I could find one, I wouldnt mind having it.

The FEG's are good, and so is the Arcus, but with racier lines. I would add a Wolff extra power firing pin spring for the upmost in safety were I to CCW one. Get whichever one appeals to you the most, and spend the rest on ammo and standard capacity (read Hi-cap) mags. Enjoy!

I really like my FEG. Very nice shooting gun. Better shooter then my HP. Trigger took a little work, but I elected to keep the magazine safety engaged. Paid $200 for mine nib. Nice blueing and minor machine marks.

I don't know if they're still imported, but the FM Argentine HP clones were pretty dandy for the price. Decent 3-dot sights, a neoprene grip, and some pooooooooor finish. Mine shot okay, didn't win any beauty contests.
