Low brass or high.

Was opening a box of Wolf 12 ga. 00 buck and noticed that the brass is taller than any Remington or Federal 2.75" shells I have. Picked up this Wolf at a show a year or so ago and had never opened it. What gives? This Wolf is marked 2.75" but w/ the brass being taller the overall length is a tad over 2.75" Is this stuff safe to fire in my 1300 Defender. Chamber is either 2 3/4 or 3" Thanks for the help guys.

Low or high brass makes no difference to shell strength or load. Its cheaper to make low brass shells, ala trap loads, than high brass hunting loads. I load heavy field loads in low brass or even aluminium base shells with 0 trouble. Its just manufactuing differences.

rim

i would think the only part of the brass that mattered would be the rim at the bottom so the ejector can snag it.

Active made shells completely out of plastic for a few years-rim and all. The only metal in them was around the flash hole in the primer pocket. I had a box or two but they only last one reload and the rims crack off so i trashed them. IME high brass is a little harder/expensive to reload because you ruin about 10-12% of your hulls with cracks or wrinkles in teh brass. Low brass i only lose about 4-5% to cracks.
